The Veyron 16.4 was a long-running pet project of Volkswagen bosses that amounted to becoming the fastest production car in the world at the time of its release, reintroducing the Bugatti badge in style. Goofy looks notwithstanding, the styling is an essential part of the design to ensure total stability at top speed. The car is powered by an 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine derived from Volkswagen designs, mated to all-wheel-drive and a seven-speed directshift automanual gearbox. The fully customisable interior is covered in leather and metal, with numerous features such as CD stereo, navigation and more. The single-piece carbon-fibre monocoque does well in crash tests, while airbags give the driver and passenger additional protection. The high-speed tyres designed specially for the Veyron 16.4 incorporate the PAX System that ensures safe handling even after sudden pressure loss. Another safety element is the rear spoiler that acts as a ‘parachute brake’ during emergency braking. A second key must be engaged when stopped to initiate "top speed" mode, when the rear spoiler sets itself to a lower position, the front air diffusers close and the vehicle lowers to further improve aerodynamic downforce.
