Daihatsu Sirion
The Sirion is Daihatsu's entry in the sub-compact segment, packed with features and space. The little Sirion offers a generous amount of space for the front passengers, including a fair bit of room between the driver seat and the front passenger seat. Rear passengers aren't so lucky, but they still get reasonable amounts of leg space between front and rear seats. The rear doors open wide to an angle of around 80 degrees, allowing easy entry and exit, and the tailgate eases handling of large luggage. There is a full 630 litres of luggage space with two people on board and the rear seats folded down. With five on board, it still has 225 litres. The top of the back door has decent head clearance and a pull handle also makes it easy to close the door. A luggage room lamp adds convenience, along with the CD/AM/FM Radio, power windows, central locking, front airbags, cup holders in the doors and the centre console, and split rear seats that are 60:40 foldable. Powered by a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder motor, the Sirion shifts gears using a 4-speed automatic, as the manual is not offered here. 14-inch steel wheels are standard, while alloys are optional, among other things.

Daihatsu Materia
Yet another entry into Daihatsu's sub-compact range, this one is a unique little number. Daihatsu advertising is so poor in this region that we only came across this specialty machine by mistake. Some prefer to call it a mini MPV, but it is really a hatchback. The little boxy car offers oodles of space thanks to the tall shape and long wheelbase. It is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, with a choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The rear doors open wide to allow easy entry and exit, and the rear seat can be optioned to slide front and back. Luggage capacity is hihgly flexible, with folding front seats and split-folding rear seats, while pockets are all over the place. This Toyota-derived vehicle has its annoying gauge cluster in the centre, and the interior treatment is all hard plastic, except for interesting touches such as illuminated speakers and handles. Other available features include with a CD/AM/FM radio, power windows, remote central locking, ABS brakes and at least dual front airbags if not more.

Daihatsu Terios
Daihatsu aims to boost sales with its new Terios 4WD. With short front and rear overhangs, a long wheelbase and wide track, it looks like it can go off-road, but not with any real verve. It's apparently aimed at people looking for the traditional 4x4 qualities of high seating position, bad-weather traction and versatility combined with small car running costs and manoeuvrability. It is longer and wider than the previous model. The interior is about the same size as a mid-sized hatchback, with a split fold-and-tumble rear seat that frees up luggage space supposedly long enough to take a mountain bike. The front floor cross-member, tunnel, sills, B-pillars and roof-side rails are all strengthened to secure the cabin. With the rear seat in use the boot capacity is 380 litres. Its 1.5-litre engine is based on the Daihatsu 1.3-litre, with variable valve timing and its torque curve is virtually flat from 3200 to 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. A centre differential transfers power with a fixed 50/50 torque split to the front and rear axles via separate propshafts. A fascia-mounted switch activates the electronically-controlled differential lock. ABS and airbags are available too.
