BMW M3 pickup is a one-off production

If you are a follower of automotive time-wasters, you would’ve noticed the photos of the prototype BMW M3 pickup, of all things, caught testing at the Nurburgring and around Germany.

Caught on video by AutoMotorUndSport magazine, the mildly-disguised car caused a minor uproar on the internet, but Autoblog has confirmed via the BMW marketing head that on April 1, a press function has been organised near Munich to show off the next M5 as well as a whole series of M3-based prototypes that never reached production, including this pickup.

While the secret may be out, we are hearing from our own sources here that BMW is planning to announce that the BMW M3 pickup is headed for production. The crucial detail will be when the announcement is made. If the press release comes out on April 1, then it would indeed be a very expensive joke that isn’t going to fool anybody.

Update: It is a partial April Fool’s joke. One car has been built, with the stock 420 hp 4.4-litre M3 engine, to be used as a factory transport. It has a metal-lined covered bed and a removable targa roof.

What do you think?
