Long-term update: Still discovering hidden features in our Range Rover

If you own a particularly decent car, loaded with technological giblets and such, have you ever found yourself discovering a completely new feature long after you’d bought the car, not knowing that it existed? It’s a good feeling, like receiving a gift.

Our Range Rover may be old, but it’s still got way more features than the average modern car. There’s a roll-up net behind the rear seats to pile up your cargo till the roof without it spilling forward (or just to lock away your hypothetical dog). There’s a button to lower the car for easier ingress and egress. There’s even rear a/c vents with its own fan and temperature controls in the back, which was something unique back in the day.

The feature we discovered was minor, but interesting. Does your car point its side-mirrors down while reversing, and the only way to stop it doing that is to turn it off completely in the settings, but then you can’t use it quickly when you need it? Well, in the old Rooney, you can have the mirrors point straight back by default, or make the right mirror point down simply by selecting right on the regular mirror-adjustment button. That way, you get the best of both worlds, being able to see the parking lines as well as checking for pedestrians, as needed. Maybe your car can do it too, and you didn’t know it.

  1. The Yukon has the same tilting mirrors but as far as my knowledge goes, there is no way of doing it instantly, leading to me turn it off completely. I see how useful a feature this can be.

  2. actually i have this in my trailblazer , mirrors turn down , so yeah

  3. my dads 2008 bmw 523i tilts it mirrors

  4. My GTI does the same

  5. In my maxima both side mirrors get tilted once you turn the side mirror selection for adjustment button to left or right and it wont tilt when the button is at centre.

  6. I have this in my LX570 but strangely it only works if my mirror adjustment toggle was set for the left side mirror to allow the right side mirror to point downwards while reversing.

In my 2014 E class, it only lowers the right side mirror while reversing if I choose adjusting the right side mirror.

In some cars it only works this feature if the mirror adjustment toggle switch is in the middle.

  7. Hello, I don’t mean to be mean but the fact is German cars have had this feature since late 1990’s.
If you leave the mirror adjustment on either of the mirrors it will tilt it down to your adjustment you did while your were in reverse. It will remember your setting and it should go back to normal once in drive and over 5-10 km/hr.

    Another fun feature:
When you stop the car if you left or right signal is on, the parking lights of that side will remain on. This is good when parked on a dark road side.

    Thanks

  8. I saw a lot of cars with this features, my brother’s wife Mazda CX-9 has this set up to off by default, but if you kept the control knob in the right or left side ( like when you want to adjust that mirror ) then the feature will be activated…

just switch the gear to reverse mode and both mirrors will tilt… in case you don’t want this, switch the knob to the off position.

  9. More than a decade old and still better than a new Prado/Land Cruiser.

  10. my Honda accord coupe does it! no big deal
