Borgward makes comeback in Frankfurt with BX7

2016 Borgward BX7 3

Borgward made a comeback last week at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show after a 50-year absence, with the launch of their new BX7 crossover. The German brand is now owned by Chinese car company Foton Motor, and the BX7 will be built in China as well.

The vehicle is about 4.7 metres long and has a cabin that can carry up to seven people, while the trunk capacity is 1,344 litres after you fold down the second and third rows of seats.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder motor producing 221 hp and 300 Nm of torque, sending power to a four-wheel drive system through a dual-clutch gearbox. This helps the Borgward BX7 with a 0-100 kph time of less than 10 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 kph.

They are also planning to release a higher variant which will be a plug-in hybrid that has a combined output of 396 hp coming from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, but coupled with an electric motor. It can also run in electric mode for up to 55 km before it runs out of battery charge.

Inside, the infotainment system has a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and offers full compatibility for Android and iOS devices. There is also Nappa leather sport seats with diamond stitching, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather paddings and a brushed aluminium trim.

The Borgward BX7 is set to go on sale initially in China, and will eventually arrive in Europe sometime next year. Whether it will make it to the UAE, Saudi Arabia or other GCC countries is still not known.
