If you hadn’t noticed, the Nissan Xterra was discontinued in August last year, with final stocks selling out by the first few months of this year. While the fate of the true body-on-frame 4×4 was up in the air, we can now confirm via sources that a new model is in development for release sometime in 2017. There is even a prototype running in Australia, with a Pathfinder Classic body.

2017 Nissan Navara

As before, the next-generation Xterra will again be based on the Navara pickup, likely carrying over a version of the 4.0-litre V6 than currently also does duty in the 2017 Nissan Patrol. The Spanish-built 2016 Nissan Navara itself was fully redesigned from the ground up and hit the streets a few months ago. Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz is also preparing a pick-up based on the Navara.

While the last Xterra was built in America, it remains to be seen where the next-gen model is sourced from. Recently, Nissan Armada production switched from the United States to Japan after it moved to the Patrol platform.

  1. It is a good decision by nissan not to kill the Xterra, it right that this segment is retreatoing for the benefit of crossovers, but in this part of the world people will always need rugged and tough body on frame suvs, also they would not have anything to compete while we see Toyota having the prado and fortuner as good off roaders, what nissan needs to do is to refine it, a lot indeed, like interior quality, some techs, and maybe some weight reduction along with the 7 speed, that would improve fuel economy a lot, the bad side of the exterra was terrible fuel economy, if they tick the right boxes, it could be my next car for the family

  2. Thanks God Nissan came to its senses. Xterra was a legendary Body On Frame True SUV. as mentioned before, it needed Engine refinement. But those rugged and abuse resistant body language should be maintained. No need to make it into a luxury SUV.

  3. I am an original owner of the prototype 2000 Nissan Xterra. I have loved it since I purchased it in 1999. Running to this day without one single problem. I was in shock when I actually had a minor oil leak this year after 17 years on the road. I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a new one then I find out you discontinued them. Why; because they are toooooo good? Bring it back.

  4. Wow. A breaking news to Xterra fans
