I usually don’t cover repetitive motorsports, but this weekend’s Singapore F1 grand prix, held for the first time during nighttime, saw race leader Felipe Massa take a little more than just fuel when he left the pit stop.
Here is an extended TV ad for VW’s American-market Routan minivan. While has-been actress Brooke Shields is somewhat funny, the bigger joke is that the ad seriously keeps emphasising the “German engineering” of the Routan. Anyone with half brain will realise that the Routan is simply a rebadged facelifted version of the all-American Chrysler Grand Voyager. VW continues to feed off people’s ignorance, selling unremarkable “upscale” Passats, overpriced “reliable” Golfs, Mexican-built “European” Jettas, and now this. Thankfully, the Routan isn’t destined for GCC markets.
While most of us here in the GCC support Obama as the next president of the United States (including me, since we share the same middle name), I found this little tidbit about the other “white old guy” running for president. Senator John McCain’s 54-year-old wife, Cindy McCain, has been trained in the art of drifting. While she describes herself as a below-average drifter, she is still a hell of a lot better than me.
This is from an event at Awafi in Ras Al Khaimah, involving the locally-popular hill-climb activities. It is a good argument on why ghetto-tuning is not a good idea.
Stunt-driver Terry Grant did a reverse-180, also known as a J-turn, between two barriers with a Renault Twingo supermini. In doing so, he set a new world record, considering he slipped the 370cm-long car through a gap that is 378cm wide. For a better view, check out the video playing on the big screen behind the track.
Not really sure where this is taking place, but it shows a guy changing a tyre on his retro racecar, while the car is still doing doughnuts! Just when I think I’ve seen it all involving cars, someone comes along doing even weirder stuff.
Here’s some rare footage of the Bugatti Veyron actually doing what it is supposed to do. Being driven full-throttle at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, it looks sharp and would make any owner think it is money well spent. But then check out the mysterious car that shows up near the end. Is that an early prototype of some Japanese supercar?
The Bugatti Veyron was the fastest car in the world for a brief period. It is said that the car can burn through an entire tank of fuel in 12 minutes at top speed. So it is probably a good idea to keep track of your fuel gauge if you plan on driving this thing around.
Considering the social situation in their country, the young men of Saudi Arabia vent their energy and frustration in unusual ways. But if “Saudi” drifting gets too boring, they go to even more extremes. Like “Saudi” skating, for instance.
This is some footage I grabbed at last year’s Ford Ride & Drive event for their 4WDs. It demonstrates the abilities of the Ford F-150 Lariat 4×4 truck on sloping surfaces.
This rusty video puts to rest the age-old question of which 4WD is “better.” The Land Cruiser or the Patrol? Or, judging by the people who conducted the “test,” maybe not.
The TV show and the movie were bad enough, but here is a reenactment of one of the jumps that made The Dukes of Hazzard popular back in the 1970s. Needless to say, it didn’t go exactly as planned.
This has to be one of the most daring TV commercial that any car company has ever come up with. Renault is showing off the safety of their cars in the ballet of crushed sheetmetal and twisted frames. It’s an ad for the European market of course.
This is a Bridgestone tyre commercial, showing how “amazing” cars start to handle with their product. Too bad reality is not that amazing. It takes a good driver to handle any car, not just a good tyre.
I’d like to thank the higher powers for not extending the concept of Ski Dubai to the entire city. This video shows how tough people in snowy cities have it.
This video just proves that you can never be too young to start driving recklessly. All those snooty corporate-sponsored safety campaigns are such a waste of money.
Project Gotham Racing 4 will be the XBox 360’s flagship driving game. I’ve never played it (or even played anything on the Xbox), but it seems the new game will have a cool intro video sequence, filming for which is in progress in the United States. I couldn’t care less for the slow-mo Arab Run, but the sight of so many cool machines street racing is just amazing.
Off-roading in these parts consists of just powering through soft sand, occassionally involving blind dune jumps and broken radiators. In other parts of the world, off-roading is a much slower sport, requiring the correct amount of equipment and skill, as seen with this modified Suzuki Samurai.
