Volkswagen Beetle

The undeniable mascot of the VW range, the car popularly known as the New Beetle isn't that new anymore, but still a weird head-turning cruiser. Passengers must make some concessions for retro style. Interior ergonomics are not as good as that in a traditional car, and there isn't a lot of trunk space. But the Beetle does come in an assortment of bright colors, including sunflowery yellow and limey green. Its exterior and interior design details are fun and creative, but very much on the feminine side. On the road, the Beetle is smooth and handles fairly okay. The convertible adds to the fun with its ability to drop the top. But the New Beetle hardly offers blistering performance, with a choice of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, with either a manual or an automatic. All Beetles are well equipped, with an AM/FM/cassette stereo, central locking with keyless remote, anti-theft system, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, dual airbags, power exterior mirrors and windows, among others. Options include a CD changer and electronic stability control.

Volkswagen Eos

The Eos is a resurrection of the Golf convertible, only with a different name. Sharing design cues, platforms and engines with the Golf, it is touted to be the first car in the world to feature a five-piece retractable hardtop. The car can somewhat seat four people, with good luggage room when the top is up. Its four-wheel independent suspension and relatively long wheelbase give it a nice ride along with good stability and handling. The Eos is available in the Middle East with three engine options, namely two 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder and a 3.2-litre V6, with choices of manual, automatic or DSG automanual, depending on model. All models are well equipped, with a CD stereo, central locking with keyless remote, anti-theft system, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, dual front airbags, side airbags, lateral airbags, a roll-bar safety system, stability control, power mirrors and windows, among others.

Volkswagen Golf

The Golf intends to be a German-designed, German-engineered and German-built alternative to the Asian-nameplate vehicles that dominate the entry level of the automotive marketplace. Unlike many of its competitors, the Golf is a hatchback and therefore offers the advantage of cargo-carrying utility not provided by the typical four-door sedans. Hatchbacks were never popular, but the VW Golf always had some sort of following here. Though the base models, namely the 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre, are no rockets, they are still responsive and fun to drive. Its four-wheel independent suspension and relatively long wheelbase give it a nice ride along with good stability and handling. The real gems are the 2.0-litre turbo GTI and the 3.2-litre R32 models, both satisfyingly fast and both featuring a clutchless manual gearbox that is still rare in any class of car that is affordable. The Golf comes standard with available safety features such as front and side-curtain airbags, ABS brakes and optional ESP, alongside available convenience features like power windows and CD stereo.

Volkswagen Golf Plus / CrossGolf

Volkswagen has expanded its model spectrum with a new Golf-based weirdo called the Golf Plus. With added extras in terms of bodywork and seating height, it is essentially a tall Golf. This allows cabin space that rivals many small 4WD offerings, all in a small exterior. There is even a CrossGolf variant of this model, with 20 mm extra ground clearance and tough-looking plastic body cladding, but it is still really a front-driven hatchback. The clever interior fittings include a rear seating system which can be shifted lengthwise by means of a new folding kinematic system. This method automatically causes the seating area to be lowered as soon as the backs of the asymmetrically adjustable, divisible seats have been folded down, resulting in a nearly level storage area. The possibility to integrate the optional CD-changer or DVD player from the Volkswagen Individual range is available. Apart from ESP and various airbags, other standard features include LED tail-lights, power windows and various other electric bits. Engines for the Plus currently include a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre, both four-cylinder and both available with either a manual or an automatic. The CrossGolf only gets the 1.6-litre engine.

Volkswagen Jetta

This VW marks the return of the Jetta nameplate to the Middle East, replacing the Bora lineup. However, it could have been better. Engines choices include a 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit and an odd 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit that is conspicuously underpowered for its size. Both engines are equipped with either a five-speed manual gearbox or the new six-speed Tiptronic automatic. Volkswagens are known for better-than-average handling, and the new Jetta is said to be no exception, making it more appealing than a Japanese econobox. The new Jetta is larger than the previous Bora, and it features a more spacious interior stuffed with convenience and lavished with Volkswagen's legendary attention to detail. Even the least-expensive model offers an elegant, high-quality cabin. Standard equipment include power windows, AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo, power outside mirrors, split/folding rear seats, remote central power locking, front airbags, side-impact airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and available electronic stability control.

Volkswagen Passat

The Passat has been a trendsetter for VW over the years, earning a distinction as the most copied design in automotive history. Many cars now look like a Passat, so the new one is now a larger car than attempts to reinvent itself. The all-new VW Passat boasts a few powerful new engines, a few weak engines, generous standard content and a high-quality interior mixed with high-tech hijinks. Volkswagen has rolled out a full line of four-door sedans, ranging from the poor 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre affordable models with nice leatherette upholstery to the more-powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged 2.0T model that just manages to be likeable, and a purely leather-clad V6-powered 3.2-litre V6 model that is destined to be extremely rare thanks to a bloated price tag. All cars are front-wheel-drive, with the exception of the all-wheel drive V6 model. All Passats come standard with the latest in safety features and electronics, including power features, front and side airbags, ABS brakes, ESP, tyre-pressure monitoring system and MP3-capable CD player.

Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkwagen's Phaeton is a luxury car for people who refuse to flaunt their wealth. If you can afford a hand-built luxury car but don't need to go around with a hood ornament to proclaim your arrival, then you may find that this expensive new VW more than meets your needs. Volkswagen is attempting to move upscale and the Phaeton is its new flagship luxury sedan, built alongside its platform-mate, the Bentley Continental GT. The VW Phaeton is available in three models, namely a 3.2-litre V6, a 4.2-litre V8 and a 6.0-litre W12, all mated to an automatic tiptronic transmission and all impressively powerful. Only the long wheelbase body style is sold in this region. The Phaeton includes as standard equipment such things as a navigation system, all-wheel drive, air suspension, draft-free four-zone automatic climate controls with vents hidden behind wood doors, 12-way front power seats and a long list of safety and driver-assist technologies. Standard safety features includes ABS brakes, anti-slip regulation, electronic differential lock, engine braking control, electronic brake force distribution and electronic stabilization technology, along with front, side and curtain airbags, and a tyre pressure monitor.

Volkswagen Polo

The VW Polo recently received a fresh redesign and upgraded equipment. The Polo, though simply a sub-compact hatchback, has a more upmarket feel, thanks to judicious use of materials. High quality interiors are synonymous with Volkswagen, and the high quality plastics and fabrics found in the Polo is no exception. Standard equipment includes a CD stereo system, along with power windows and other electricals. Sadly, the only available powerplant in the Polo is the 1.4-litre four-cylinder unit. Available with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, this engine kills the upscale illusion. The new Polo includes standard safety systems such as ABS brakes, Hydraulic Brake Assist, and dual front airbags. Side airbags, a curtain airbag system and Electronic Stabilisation Programme are optional. The Polo also has high levels of torsional rigidity, leading to improved crash performance, impressive refinement and driving dynamics.

Volkswagen Sharan

With the Sharan, VW properly wets its feet in the minivan segment, though it is falling behind the modern competition nowadays. It provides ample room for the driver and six adult passengers to sit back, relax and enjoy their individually formed 'business class' seats. The Sharan offers the flexibility of removing the rear seats to open up a massive 2,610 cubic litres of storage space. Powered by two aging VW engines, namely the 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder and the 2.8-litre VR6 units, they can be had with a manual or an automatic. Built in Portugal, the Sharan comes standard with five removable rear seats, ABS brakes with electronic brake-pressure distribution, electronic climate control both front and rear, alarm with interior protection and remote central locking, front side airbag system, driver's and front passenger's airbags, electric front windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, radio/CD stereo with 10 speakers, and seat belts for all three rows of seating.

Volkswagen Touareg

The VW Touareg is a luxurious and comfortable 4WD that is surprisingly capable both on the road and off it too. Facelifted and mildly upgraded for 2007, it is a practical vehicle, and on the highway, the Touareg offers a firm but smooth ride, and its handling is responsive for its mass, while in the desert, a full set of off-roading equipment comes in handy, including locking diffs and low-range gearing. The range includes a new 3.6-litre V6, an upgraded 4.2-litre V8 and a very limited 6.0-litre W12. All models come with a six-speed automatic with manual shift capability. Also standard is Volkswagen's 4Motion permanent all-wheel-drive system. The Touareg seats five, and there is no third row of seats available. The 4WD comes standard with leatherette upholstery, dual-zone climate control with rear seat controls, wood trim, power windows, mirrors and sunroof, electrically adjustable front seating, alloy wheels of various sizes, ABS and many more items. Higher models get leather, auto-dimming outside mirrors with memory; and other luxuries. All models include front, side-impact and curtain airbags.

Volkswagen Touran

The Touran 7-seater is a minivan smaller than the Sharan, with four forward-opening doors and a rear tailgate. Engines include the small 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre, both four-cylinder units with a manual or automatic. The high feature level of the Touran includes as standard equipment Electronic Stability Programme, ABS with brake assist system, six airbags, active head restraints for driver and front passenger, and three-point automatic seat belts for all seats. Among the most important features of this new Volkswagen are its versatile interior layout and the good amount of space it provides, with a load area that can be as large as 1,989 litres. The three separate seats in the second row each weigh less than 16 kilograms and can be individually slid forward and back, repositioned sideways, folded into a very small space or removed completely. Similarly, the two rear seats can be folded flat into the floor when not in use. There are up to 39 storage spaces and compartments inside the well-planned interior.
