2010 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang returns

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang returns

The Ford Shelby GT500 returns in the new-and-improved Mustang shell, with more power and refinement to boot. It comes in coupe and convertible forms.

Worked on by Ford’s SVT team, the 2010 Shelby GT500 is powered by a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-litre DOHC V8 engine “expected” to produce 540 hp and 691 Nm of torque, with a redline is 6250 rpm. The aluminium “power dome” hood has holes in it to help cool the engine, and hides a conical tuner-style air filter for the cold-air intake, which necessitated moving the Cobra snake badge to the other side of the grille for 2010, to maximise airflow. The Shelby’s distinct supercharger sounds has been reduced, with a resonator between the air filter and engine throttle body. A new exhaust also attempts to provide the V8 noise without being excessive.

The transmission is a 6-speed manual, with a new final drive ratio changed from 3.31 to 3.55 for better acceleration. The twin-disc clutch on the transmission has been upgraded to improve driveability. The discs on the 2010 Shelby GT500 are larger, being 250 mm in diameter compared with 215 mm on the outgoing model, and made of copper and fibreglass for strength. The suspension system remains independent at the front and live-axle at the rear. Brakes, suspension and steering have also been improved. However, all the improvements have pushed its weight to as high as 1780 kg, making it as heavy as some full-size sedans.

The GT500 gets Goodyear F1 Supercar tyres and aluminium wheels. The coupe gets forged 19-inch rims while the convertible gets cast 18-inch ones. Our guess is the open-top version probably can’t handle the extra harshness created by the lower-profile tyres on the larger wheels due to lesser body rigidity.

The 2010 Shelby GT500 features AdvanceTrac, Ford’s stability control system with several options. The default “on” mode accommodates every-day driving, and a Sport mode delivers for those wanting to put the Shelby GT500 through its paces on the track. The system also can be turned completely off, although the anti-lock brake system and other active safety systems remain in place. Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, side-impact airbags and more.

Numerous aerodynamic upgrades, including a redesigned splitter, were made to the front end of the 2010 Shelby GT500. A revised duck-tail spoiler sits at the edge of the trunk lid. A non-functioning diffuser on the rear bumper integrates big exhaust tips, each 10 cm in diameter. In their attempt to be artsy, Ford forgot to take any proper photos of the rear for now.

Using genuine materials such as real leather in all seats, real aluminium on the instrument panel and Alcantara inserts on the seats and steering wheel, the cabin is much more upscale than in any previous Mustang. Cabin features include Ford’s SYNC voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system, with Bluetooth and the ability to collect vehicle ‘health’ reports. The Ambient Lighting System allows drivers to customise the interior lighting of the vehicle to suit their mood. The enhanced MyColor system features seven base colours, and owners also can create 125 custom colours by mixing the red-green-blue palette. A navigation system is optional in American markets.

The 2010 Shelby GT500 will publicly debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show this month. It will be in U.S. dealer showrooms before summer next year. It might be available through special order for Dubai and other GCC markets later.

  6. i love current gt500 but new one also looks hot and sexy.. but more weight make it heavy thats really bad.. o to 100 how much seconds???

  7. Nice looking car.
I love it especially the rims. But a little disappointed about the outdated rear suspension. 🙁

  8. Never liked Ford But this is different

  9. hey Mash and friends…rented a base 2009 Ford Mondeo today..Mash, i’m serious here, but it is one hell of a car!!.really very underestimated!!..You really gotta test drive one man!..with only 16″ steel wheels the road grip and handling levels are excellent…the 2.3L engine is strong, refined and engine noise is well muffled..it is really a very underestimated car..I myself used to berate it after driving the hopeless new Focus, sayin that even the Mondeo must be the same..but then, this car jus baffled me!..it is galaxies better than the previous gen Mondeo (which i own)..i’m almost sure the Mondeo will be an exciting “Ford” test drive for u!!..For 75K, this base car is an Accord and Camry killer!..Please do review this car..

  10. thanks for the quick review vivek… 😉

  11. did ya drive a focus sport?

  12. i drove the base model..but evn the Sport sports the very same useless 1.6L engine..so whatz the point? 😆

  13. Thats because the focus sport over here isnt the real deal, Its the Focus ST which is the real powerhouse in the focus line and quite powerful i believe. Comes with turbo charged engine and sporty tuned handling..

  14. Have you seen the price of the new Fiesta it is about 70K that is close to the Mondeo which is two class bigger

anyway have anyone seen the new S60 for 2010?

  15. 70K for the fiesta??? 😯 😯 are u sure about that??

  16. That what I heard when my friend asked about the car in Abu Dhabi motorshow

  17. maybe that particular car had more options. sales ppl always confusingly tell you the price of the display model whenever you ask them.

  18. Man but still..they must be having cuckoo in their heads to sell a Fiesta for that price!! I would any day add 5 grands n go for the base Mondeo..Forget the Ford Fiesta, but evn a Toyota Yaris won’t sell at that price even (if ever) it came with better looks and more options!!

  19. The Fiesta Titanium has way out league of the Yaris but the problem at that price is way too much and vivek is right.

nobody is wanna buy a Fiesta which STARTS at 70K or even 60K due to the fact that this price is similar to starting for bigger class which is for the family.

Fiestas Yaris Tiidas,….etc these car are mostly student cars or people with low income and small family or 2nd car for low income and at that price Ford could forget to be selling it here.

  20. 70k for probably the top model fiesta, even the Honda Jazz is around 70k full options and 81k for full options Civic? DAYEM!

  21. Murf you going to remember the good old days when these cars were dirt cheap. You could say that to you children or grand children when the Jazz will be priced 1/2 mil and you would say I remember the Jazz used to be 70K 30 years ago 😀

I bough my Fiesta at 36K this is double the price.

  22. actually speaking, we can think of the good old days when I used to get a base Honda Accord for only 69K while now it is more than 80K. Same goes with the Camry..What more?! I bought my 2006 Ford Mondeo mid-option trim brand new for 60K..and now the base starts at 75K!..hmmm..who knows, maybe as Salem said, in future, the Jazz will cost 1/2 a million!..And a 1.8L base Corolla will be a million dollar car owned only by the presidents or ministers of ultra-rich countries!

  23. Author

Those cars already cost billions of dollars in Zimbabwe. But I still remember the days when an Accord cost 55k here.

  24. car dealers are marking approx 50% as profit on cars sold here i guess ,labor/raw material costs , the weak dollar and yen getting stronger can attribute to car prices goin sky high, besides offering more specs could be some reasons for car prices goin high…..

  25. who decides the prices here? is it set by the manufacturer as in a recommended market retail price or these agents with exclusive dealerships charge whatever they want?

  26. I got the same question as you Shafiq.

But I think the price usally based for certain region and even in that way Oman has a price advantage over the UAE especially when it comes with Toyota

  27. But the Oman cars are i mean the toyata are also like omanis not trust whenever it will give u fault. How Much is this Shelby Gt it looks so monstorous really cool like a cobra snake. 😈

  28. does anyone know how much is this car going to be sold in the UAE! dubai?!! 🙄

  29. i mean the shelby cobra?!

  30. i like it very much much and i want to know its price in DHS

  31. car is mui bueno i like is nice

  32. 2Chris > I thought in Dubai everyone rides ferrari and lamborghini :)))))
