Indian-built cars crash-tested with expected results

Global NCAP Tata Nano crash test
An international crash-test agency called Global NCAP conducted the first ever independent crash tests for some of the most popular cars in India, several of which are also sold in the Middle East.

The cars chosen for crash testing were the Tata Nano, the Maruti-Suzuki Alto 800, the Ford Figo, the previous-generation Hyundai i10, the pre-facelift Volkswagen Polo and the newer VW Polo, all of them hatchbacks. The agency used the basic versions for each model so none of them came with airbags except for the new VW Polo, which now comes standard with 2 airbags. As a result, all the non-airbag cars received zero out of five stars for adult occupant protection.

Volkswagen no longer sells a non-airbag version of the Polo, so the new model achieved a four-star rating for adult occupant protection.

Global NCAP crash test ratings

The vehicle structures of the Hyundai i10, Tata Nano and Maruti-Suzuki Alto 800 collapsed during the crash tests. Apparently the structural weakness is bad enough that even if the cars came with airbags, these would not be effective enough to protect the occupants. Only the structures of the VW Polo and the Ford Figo remained intact after the 64 kph crash test.

  1. If at 64 kmph its that bad, What would happen at higher speeds?

  2. Whats even worse is the Hyundai i10 . European i10’s are also manufactured in India , however , i10’s for the Indian market did WORSE than the i10’s made for the European markets. However all manufacturers (who had representatives at the test) hid behind the line “We meed India’s Govt. requirements” . Kudos to VW for providing MORE than what the Govt. asks for.

  3. Result shows the sloppiness of Indian Govt Standards 🙁

  4. In India, all that matters is fuel economy & on road price, so every gram they can reduce will increase fuel economy and every cost cutting measures done. This is the only place whr manufacturer has so much flexibility as well demand.
Now, these equipped cars, airbags gets inflates only in case of direct impact, but not always the crash happens so direct.(direct meaning the angle of hit- range of sensor)

Not anytime soon, even in India.

    • If at all Renault is brave enough to play a gamble launching the Renault Kwid Concept for a price sensitive Indian auto market, u would expect Maruti Suzuki to follow up with Suzuki XA Alpha been launched within 12-18months.
