2020 Genesis GV80 debuts as Hyundai’s luxury brand expands line-up

Since Hyundai announced the Genesis brand in 2015, their range has always had only luxury sedans. Though the roots of the young brand and the sedan-only lineup were mocked by many, Genesis is still around, honing their products year after year. An SUV was a long time coming. It has been christened Genesis GV80.

The Genesis GV80 flaunts the Genesis design language, borrowed from the sedans and moulded to fit into its high-riding shape. A large chrome grill, now a staple on almost all luxury machines, sits upfront. The horizontally split headlamp units flank the grill, giving it a distinct aura. At the rear too, the tail lamps get a horizontal split.

Inside the GV80, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen takes centre stage. At the front, it gets an augmented reality navigation system. It also offers a Genesis Integrated Controller which recognises handwriting inputs from the user, regarding driving destinations or phone numbers etc. and uses it to control the tech inside the vehicle.

The tech list does not end there. A noise-canceling system monitors road noise in real-time and emits sound waves that cancel them out so that the cabin is kept as silent as possible. To up the ante even further, it gets an auto-purifier which monitors the air quality inside the cabin and acts on it when needed.

The engine option on the Genesis GV80 as of now is a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine producing 278 hp and 588 Nm of torque. This gets a rear-wheel-drive system as standard and all-wheel-drive is certainly available. This engine may not make it out of the GV80’s home market, South Korea, where it has been revealed now.

When the GV80 is launched in our shores, we can expect the engines from the top rung of Genesis, Hyundai or Kia lineups to end up in its bay. The most probable choice is some form of the 3.3-litre turbo V6 from from the Genesis G70, although the old 3.8-litre and 5.0-litre units from the G80 might also be available. But we’ll have to wait for an official word from Genesis to confirm that.

When launched, the GV80 will lock horns with the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5. In South Korea, the Genesis GV80 goes on sale by the end of January. The rest of the world will get it by the end of 2020.

Comments

  1. The engines coming here are the new engines announced recently by Hyundai which are, 2.5 L 4 Cyl turbo charged making 300 hp, and the new 3.5 twin turbo V6 making 380 hp.

  2. Looks like better VFM like other Genesis as well…
