2021 Hyundai i20 debuts with completely new design and tech

Sporting a design that was growing a little too long in the tooth, the Hyundai i20 hatchback needed an update. For the 2021 model year comes an all-new Hyundai i20 which flaunts a new design and more tech.

The styling of the 2021 Hyundai i20 now conforms to the latest Hyundai design language with edgy lines and a wider grill. The beltline of the i20 raises up towards the back, just like that of the current car. There is now a new quarter-panel window on the C-pillar. At the rear, the new i20 gets full width LED tail lamps.

The 2021 i20 is bigger in dimensions compared to the outgoing version but its not very significant on paper. It is just 30 mm wider and 5 mm longer than the current car. The wheelbase is now 10 mm longer. Though the figures look bleak, in reality, they liberate more room inside the 2021 i20 for passengers and cargo. The new i20 gets 25 litres of boot space more than the current model.

Inside the i20, there is more tech than ever. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system can be paired with an eight-speaker BOSE sound system for a supreme audio experience. It also gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Hyundai’s Blue Link Connected Car tech. Another 10.25-inch screen is utilised for the digital instrument cluster.

Hyundai’s new SmartSense safety package is also offered with the 2021 i20. It includes navigation-based intelligent cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning system and cross-traffic alert.

Powering the new i20 would be the 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine which churns out 83 hp and it is connected to a five-speed manual gearbox. The 1.0-litre GDi engine from Hyundai is also offered in two states of tune, 99 hp and 118 hp. This engine can be connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox or a new six-speed intelligent manual which disconnects the transmission from the engine when you ease off the throttle. The GDi engine can also be paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

The pricing on the 2021 Hyundai i20 is not out yet. The car will be shown at the upcoming 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
