2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV brings back the legend

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV brings back the legend

Half a year ago, Hummer made a comeback 11 years after its demise during The Great Recession as a GMC sub-brand with an electric pickup truck. Everyone knew that a Hummer EV SUV was coming and now their beliefs turn into reality. The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV officially debuts and it looks like a brute, just like the classic Hummer.

The big Hummer EV SUV is a perfect blend of nostalgia and state-of-the-art tech, based on what we can see so far. It features a tri-motor setup, with a cheaper two-motor model slated for launch later. The power is down to 830 hp from the 1000 hp in the truck but the torque rating is the same, at 15,592 Nm. Do not be alarmed by the large number. For electric vehicles with multiple motors, the torque is measured at the wheel and not the engine and this can hike up the numbers quite significantly. But in the conventional world, the torque rating of the Hummer EV SUV should be almost the same as — if not more than — heavy-duty diesel trucks. That is impressive for a large luxury SUV.

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV looks like the truck from the front but gets a butch SUV shape at the rear, along with a tailgate-mounted full-size spare tyre. The wheel size can go up to 22-inches, in an introductory Edition 1 model. If you want your Hummer to do what the original Humvee did, you can opt for the Extreme Off-Road Package, which adds 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires, front eLocker, virtual rear-lockers, underbody cameras, heavy-duty half shafts, and additional protection for vital parts. It will offer seating for 5, just like the truck.

All the tech goodies from the truck, including the four-wheel-steer crabwalk that lets you drive sideways, Extract Mode, and the Watts to Freedom launch control have popped into the SUV as well. It may also feature the brand’s latest Super Cruise autonomous driving tech. The SUV also shares the truck’s Ultium platform with the 800V architecture, except for the base model, which uses a 400V system. The most range you can get from the SUV is more than 480 km, but this is just a preliminary estimate and may change when the truck hits the streets.

Well, here is the catch. Though a GMC Hummer EV SUV sounds delightful (not literally), it will take quite a wait to get it. The SUV will go on sale only in 2023, starting with an Edition 1 that adds cosmetic upgrades. The range will start at US$ 79,995 (Dhs 293,581) in the States for the two-motor EV2 model but this will be launched only in 2024.
