2023 Land Rover Defender 130 extends to seat 8

2023 Land Rover Defender 130 extends to seat 8

The Land Rover Defender is an iconic name. The legendary off-roader was completely reimagined a couple of years ago. The short-wheelbase Defender 90 and the longer 110 enjoys decent reception around the world. Now, Land Rover employs it to perform a more family-oriented function, with an even longer Land Rover Defender 130 that can seat up to 8 passengers.

The length increase of the Defender 130 comes mostly from the longer rear overhang. The Defender 130 is longer by 340 mm. This not only liberates ample room for a 2+3+3 seating arrangement but also increases cargo space. With the second and third rows folded, the Defender 130 can eat up to 2,291 litres of luggage. With the second row up, the Defender 130 can manage 1,232 litres.

To make life easier for all passengers, Land Rover has thrown in a few extra comfort features. The third row gets its own ventilation system, along with optional four-zone climate control for the vehicle. The second row can be easily folded and moved. The boot also gets a special button to lower the Defender 130’s air suspension to make loading cargo easier. The Defender 130 also gets a new Cabin Air Purification Plus system to make the air safer for every passenger on board.

The interior can be kitted with Defender 130 exclusive trims and colours. It also gets a 10.25-inch infotainment system and an 11.4-inch driver information display.

Powering this bigger Defender 130 are two electrified petrol engines. A mild-hybrid unit opens up the range, with the P300 trim. This is a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine with 296 hp and 470 Nm of torque. A higher P400 trim uses a more powerful version of the same engine, with 395 hp and 550 Nm. The standard mechanicals on the Defender 130 include an all-wheel-drive with Terrain Response System, a ZF 8-Speed transmission, and air suspension. There is no V8 in the picture anywhere, at least for now.

The Land Rover Defender 130 features all the off-road features of the smaller models, not to mention the pedigree that comes with the Defender marque. Will this new, longer Defender succeed in expanding the off-roader’s reach into the family customer turf? Or does it only dilute the Defender formula?
