Overview
The latest Astra is a competitive five-door hatchback from General Motors' German division, with a decent-sized wheelbase that aims for comfort and space. The Astra received an unnoticeable facelift for 2007 that now adds a chrome crossbar on the radiator grille, and black roof trim strips and bumper guards. It comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine for the Middle East market, mated specifically to a four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Features include power windows, electric mirrors, cloth upholstery, 60/40 split-folding rear seat back, keyless entry, power steering, CD stereo, trip computer and alloy wheels. The Astra comes with a standard tyre repair kit instead of a spare tyre to improve luggage volume, which expands when the rear seat backs are folded down. Safety features include front airbags, front-side airbags, ABS brakes with emergency brake assist, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Stability control is optional.

Known Problems
Radio switch fault turns stereo on by itself and drains batteries in pre-2006 models. Reports of faulty parking brake and steering-column control stalks. If a certain "rear electrical centre" module fails, then fuel gauge, central locking and power windows all stop working. Premature wear of front suspension bushings.
