Volkswagen Golf 2017 Overview

Available from early 2013, the "Mark 7" VW Golf may look the same, but is really completely new, the big news being several weight-saving enhancements that form the car. The two "TSI" engine choices are a 1.2-litre and a 1.4-litre, both turbocharged 4-cylinder units mated to 7-speed "DSG" automanual transmissions. All Golf models now have touchscreen systems as standard, starting with a 5.8-inch colour display and rising to the range-topping satellite navigation system with 8-inch colour display that operates with finger gestures. Features include CD/MP3 stereo, auxiliary inputs, Bluetooth telephone, multiple airbags, power windows, keyless entry and such, with optional features such as sunroof, smart keyless entry and start, 5.8-inch touchscreen, fog lamps and more. Between the front seats, space is increased by virtue of the new electronic parking brake with auto-hold feature. The Golf's steering now uses a variable-ratio electric system, and with optional Park Assist can parallel-park the car automatically. It is also available with driver-profile selection, which allows the driver to choose from several modes that alter the throttle mapping and engine management to the chosen style, such as Eco and Sport. Standard on all new Golf models is a multi-collision brake system which automatically brakes the vehicle after a collision, to reduce kinetic energy significantly and thus minimise the chance of a second impact. Other available electronic aids include adaptive cruise control and city emergency braking, both capable of applying full braking to a stop. Further options include a Driver Alert System that monitors the driver's inputs to detect any signs of tiredness, while a camera-operated Lane Assist system can help keep the car in a specific lane, providing countersteering assistance where necessary, while the Dynamic Light Assist system optionally masks the vehicle's high beam lighting to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.
