BMW 6-Series Coupe 2006 Overview

The all-new 6-Series was introduced in 2003, filling the hole in the line-up left since the end of the 8-Series. The last actual 6-Series was around back in the 1980s. Based on the underpinnings of the 5-Series, the new 6-Series was introduced with a 4.4 L V8 engine for the 645Ci, but this has since been replaced by the 650Ci with a 4.8-litre V8 in 2006. In 2004, a more affordable inline 6-cylinder engine was introduced in the 630i, upgraded in power for 2006. This was soon followed by a convertible model. Unlike that of the new 5-Series and 7-Series models, the styling of the new 6 Series has generally received a warm welcome from the public, for unknown reasons. The new 6-Series was designed to look like a shark, and really does remind you of one, but it is far from good-looking. The controversial "Bangle-butt" rear styling works somewhat better on the shapely 6-Series than on other BMW models though. The 6-Series has become the vehicle of choice for rich town-cruising yuppies, but it is actually an excellent performance car, available with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, with an available six-speed SMG automanual in the V8. A mild facelift came for the 2008 model, adding minor gadgetry updates.

In early convertibles, top may not lower because a sensor in the rear window may not be reporting that the window is down, fixed under warrranty. Night vision display malfunctions due to wiring harness damage near headlights, fixed under warranty. Automatic headlights may not go off when exiting a tunnel or parking garage due to miscommunication between rain sensor and headlight module, fixed under warranty. Runflat tyres wear out by 30,000 kms. Fancy carbon-fibre roof on M6 deteriorates under regular sun exposure. The lens for the centre brake lamp may crack.
