Volvo S60 2003 reviews

Handsome looks, extensive engine choices

Tight rear headroom, lacks sporting edge of Germans

Volvo S60 2003 Overview

The S60 is tuned to be a sports sedan, but though it is betrayed by a front-wheel-drive chassis, it looks like a sleek sports coupe from afar. The interior is fairly spacious even with the swooping roofline, and it offers more of a midsize package than a compact one, even though it is occassionally pitted against smaller German rivals in comparisons. For the Middle East market, there were four powerplants from 2001 up to 2003. These include a basic 2.4-litre, a 2.0-litre turbo and a 2.4-litre turbo for the run-of-the-mill S60 sedan models, and a higher-tuned 2.3-litre turbo for the sporty front-wheel-drive T5. All engines are five-cylinder, and have an automatic with tiptronic, although some can be had with a manual too. Standard equipment includes CD stereo, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, cloth or leather cabin, alloy wheels of various sizes, power windows, electric mirrors, optional sunroof, wood trim, automatic a/c and power-adjustable front seats. Maintaining Volvo tradition, safety features include dual front airbags, side impact airbags for SIPS, inflatable curtain airbags and WHIPS whiplash protection. The all-wheel-drive models available in Europe were not marketed in the GCC during these years.

Volvo S60 2003 Reliability & Resale Value

Reliability
Resale Value
Known Problems Central locking and stereo faults. Engine mounts fail prematurely. Alternator dies due to heat, but redesigned replacement apparently available. Possible oil leaks from differential vent rectified with redesigned replacement vent valve. Air filter box bends out of shape due to pressure, and replacement is necessary to avoid serious damage. Engine ECU, suspension bushings and turbo seals may crap out closer to 100,000 kms. Check for suspension ball-joint wear. Cabin trim peels off eventually. Wrong error messages about burnt-out bulbs seem common. Other random electrical faults.
