Jaguar S-Type 2004 Overview

The S-Type sporting sedan is a great example of a polarising retro design, and though we love its looks, many out there don't. It was originally launched for 2000, then upgraded for 2003, and received a facelift in 2005. The 2003 update apparently had improved the car dramatically, while adding a set of new V8 motors. For 2005, Jaguar updated the styling, revised the interior, and retuned the suspension. Engines include the adequate base 3.0-litre V6, the decent 4.2-litre V8 and the over-the-top supercharged 4.2-litre V8, all mated to a ZF six-speed automatic with basic manual shift capability. Jaguar's quality has been dramatically improved over the past few years. Depending on model, features include power seats with memory, a split-folding rear seat, automatic dual-zone climate control, power adjustable steering column with tilt-away entry and exit action, twin-function trip computer, and cruise control. Safety features include stability and traction control, ABS brakes and numerous airbags. Options include satellite navigation, power adjustable foot pedals, self-leveling xenon headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. Front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, upgraded upholstery, sports suspension and other options are also available.

Jaguar S-Type 2004 Reliability & Resale Value

Resale Value
Known Problems Knocking noise heard from transmission when downshifting, but can be fixed by putting thread locking compound on the transmission output spines. If shifting is harsh, engine and transmission control modules need reprogramming. In early models, the outside temperature display reads high because the sensor is too close to the oil cooler. The centre brake-light is loose and must be reattached with stronger tape. The fuel-tank cap's seal fails, which causes "check engine" light to come on. The remote keyless entry might fail in early models, and module has to be replaced. Noise from power steering means system needs flushing and refilling after replacing the O-rings in the rack-and-pinion unit's fittings. Early models may have expensive problems with climate control panel, and possibly with other electrical components. Rear brake-pad wear is excessive, supposedly due to electronic handbrake, in post-2005 cars. Parts are expensive, even if many are shared with Ford vehicles.
