Jaguar X-Type 2004 reviews

Sharp looks, ride quality, all-wheel-drive models

Front-wheel-drive base model, faster competition

Jaguar X-Type 2004 Overview

The X-Type is an elegant entry-level Jaguar that loses none of its charm thanks to great styling and suspension tuning. It is, however, based on the lowly Ford Mondeo platform, as evidenced by a front-wheel-drive base model. The higher models do benefit from full-time all-wheel drive, which improves traction in all road conditions. Sold mainly in sedan guise regionally, the basic front-driven car can be had with a 2.1-litre V6, while the all-wheel-drive models can be had with either a 2.5-litre V6 or a 3.0-litre V6. All cars land in this region with a five-speed automatic gearbox, though you could probably special-order a manual version if you really wanted one. Features include leather-trimmed seating, and power-operated windows, mirrors, door locks and driver's seat. All X-Types are also equipped with automatic climate control, remote locking, an auto-dimming interior mirror, tilt/telescope steering wheel and alloy wheels. Available features include a moonroof, Xenon headlights, parking sensors, navigation system and larger wheels. The sports package offers a mesh grille, a deeper front spoiler and lower side sills, a rear spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels and high-performance tyres. Safety features include various airbags, ABS brakes and a stability control system.

Random electrical problems, including jerky transmission, rough-running engine and "check engine" light coming on after petrol fill-ups, all sometimes fixed by software updates. Inner tyre wear on 4WD models. Wire-clip holding lower radiator hose may come off if not fitted properly, leading to coolant loss.
