The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster debuted in 2011, a year after the Coupe. It is supposed to be an everyday-use supercar, a product of in-house development by AMG. The coupe's trademark 'gullwing' doors are lost here in favour of conventional doors, easing entry and exit. Underneath the long bonnet is the usual AMG-built 6.2-litre V8 engine, and mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automanual gearbox in this application. A lightweight structure molded largely from carbon-fibre and aluminium double-wishbone suspension form the basics of the SLS. Among other things, the centre console incorporates the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which enables SLS owners to customise their vehicle set-up, while the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is operated by means of the E-SELECT lever. Beyond the usual power accessories and comfort features such as automatic a/c, "airscarf" headrests and cruise control, the simplistic interior can be customised in various colours, and can be fitted with options such as sports seats, metal trim, various leather choices, nicer paint and carbon-fibre appliqués. Further options include different 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, pricey Bang & Olufsen stereo and a sports steering wheel.
