Arcfox Alpha S

Road Test: Arcfox Alpha S

Chinese EV brands are no longer playing catch-up, they’re setting the pace. The Arcfox Alpha S is a good example of that shift. Positioned as a premium electric sedan under BAIC’s Arcfox brand, it combines long range, strong performance, and a heavy focus on tech.

On paper, it looks like a rival to cars such as the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Han. But in reality, it takes a slightly different approach — leaning more toward comfort, space, and technology rather than outright driving engagement.

Exterior

The Alpha S follows a clean, aerodynamic design philosophy. The front end is minimal, with slim LED headlights and a closed-off grille, typical of EVs. The side profile is more interesting – a long wheelbase, coupe-like roofline, and flush door handles give it a premium, almost fastback look.

At nearly 4.9 metres long with a 2915 mm wheelbase, this is not a compact sedan.

The rear gets a full-width LED light bar, which is becoming standard in this segment, but it works well here.

Overall, it looks modern and premium, but not overly aggressive.

Interior

Step inside, and the Alpha S immediately feels tech-heavy.

The highlight is the ultra-wide display that stretches across the dashboard, giving it a futuristic feel. Material quality is strong for the segment, with soft-touch surfaces and a clean layout.

Cabin space is a major strength. Thanks to the long wheelbase, rear passengers get generous legroom, making it suitable for family use or even executive transport.

Noise insulation is also impressive. Being an EV helps, but Arcfox has gone further with soundproof glass and insulation to reduce wind and road noise significantly.

This is a cabin designed more for comfort than driver focus — and it shows.

Arcfox Alpha S Powertrain & Performance

The Alpha S in its single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) form produces around 218 hp, and that setup defines the character of the car.

0–100 kph is claimed to be 8.3 seconds, which isn’t headline-grabbing, but it’s more than adequate for everyday driving. Like most EVs, the initial response is immediate, so it feels quicker off the line than the numbers suggest. In city traffic and short overtakes, it never feels underpowered.

Ride & Handling

Out on the road, the focus is clearly on smoothness rather than aggression. Power delivery is linear and predictable, making it easy to drive in daily conditions. The rear-wheel-drive layout does give it a slightly more balanced feel compared to front-driven EVs, but it’s tuned for stability rather than playfulness.

Handling is safe and composed. The steering is light, which makes it easy to manoeuvre in urban environments, but it doesn’t offer much feedback when pushed. Body control is decent, though you do feel the weight if you start driving harder. This is not a car that encourages spirited cornering, it’s more about relaxed, confident driving.

Where the Alpha S really stands out is ride comfort. The suspension setup does a good job of absorbing bumps and uneven surfaces, which works well for UAE roads. It feels settled at highway speeds, making long-distance driving effortless.

Cabin refinement is another strong point. Being an EV helps, but the Alpha S goes further with solid insulation, resulting in a quiet and relaxed cabin. Wind and road noise are well suppressed, even at higher speeds, giving it a more premium feel than its price point might suggest.

Overall, the RWD Alpha S isn’t built to impress on a twisty road. It’s built to be easy, comfortable, and stress-free to drive every day, and in that role, it delivers well.

Arcfox Alpha S Range & Charging

The rear-wheel-drive Alpha S is offered with a large battery, about 94.5 kWh, which is a big part of why it leans more toward comfort and long-distance usability rather than outright performance.

On paper, the RWD model delivers up to 735 km (CLTC). That makes it well suited for daily commuting without frequent charging and long inter-city drives.

DC fast charging is supported, with peak speeds typically in the 140–180 kW range depending on the variant.

  • 10–80% charge: roughly 30–40 minutes on a fast charger
  • AC home charging: around 10–12 hours (wallbox)

Charging performance is competitive, though not class-leading, but the large battery helps offset that by reducing how often you need to plug in.

Technology & Safety

The Alpha S leans heavily into tech.

Key highlights include:

  • Advanced driver assistance systems
  • Adaptive cruise control and lane assist
  • Large integrated infotainment system
  • Optional Huawei-powered autonomous driving tech with LiDAR (HI version)

The Huawei Inside version is particularly interesting, offering one of the most advanced ADAS systems in a production car from China.

Practicality

The Arcfox Alpha S is built with everyday usability in mind, and that shows in how well it handles typical family and daily driving needs. The five-seater layout is genuinely spacious, with a long wheelbase translating into excellent rear legroom, making it comfortable for adult passengers even on longer journeys. Rear-seat comfort is a clear highlight, with a flat floor (thanks to the EV platform) adding to the sense of space and making it easier for three passengers to sit across when needed.

Boot capacity stands at around 550 litres, which is more than enough for weekly grocery runs, airport luggage, or weekend trips. The opening is wide and practical, so loading larger items isn’t a hassle. Around the cabin, there’s also a good amount of storage for everyday items, which adds to its usability as a daily drive

Arcfox Alpha S Verdict

The Arcfox Alpha S doesn’t try to chase the usual “driver’s car” narrative and that’s exactly why it works. Instead of focusing on sharp handling or outright performance, it leans into what actually matters for most buyers in the range: comfort, range, technology, and interior space. In day-to-day use, those priorities make far more difference than lap times or steering feedback.

Behind the wheel, it delivers a relaxed and effortless driving experience. The ride quality is well suited to local road conditions, the cabin remains impressively quiet even at highway speeds, and the overall refinement gives it a more premium feel than you might expect. It’s the kind of car you can comfortably drive every day, whether it’s city commutes or longer inter-emirate trips, without fatigue.

The range and battery setup further strengthen its appeal. You’re not constantly planning your charging stops, which is still a key concern for many EV buyers in the region. Combine that with a spacious cabin and strong rear-seat comfort, and the Alpha S starts to make a lot of sense as a family car or even a chauffeur-driven executive option.

For UAE buyers who are cross-shopping the usual options from Tesla or BYD, the Alpha S presents a different kind of value proposition. It’s not about being the quickest or the most talked about, it’s about being easy to live with, comfortable over long distances, and packed with usable technology.

In that sense, the Arcfox Alpha S is less about making a statement, and more about delivering a well-rounded, low-stress EV ownership experience, and for many buyers, that might actually be the smarter choice.
