Mitsubishi Confirms Return Of The Pajero, Global Debut Set For Autumn 2026

Mitsubishi Motors has officially confirmed the return of the Pajero nameplate, announcing that an all-new Pajero SUV will make its global debut in autumn 2026. The iconic off-roader was discontinued in international markets in 2021, making this its first return to the global stage in five years.

More than four decades of off-road heritage

The Pajero remains one of Mitsubishi’s most recognizable vehicles, having built a strong reputation over four generations since its introduction in 1982. Originally developed to combine the off-road capability of a traditional four-wheel-drive vehicle with the comfort and practicality of a passenger car, the Pajero went on to become a global success, with cumulative sales exceeding 3.25 million units across more than 170 countries and regions.

Dakar-winning reputation

Few SUVs can match the Pajero’s motorsport heritage. The model became a dominant force in the Dakar Rally after entering the event in 1983, securing 12 overall victories, including an impressive streak of seven consecutive wins. These achievements helped establish the Pajero’s reputation for durability, reliability, and serious off-road performance, qualities that made it particularly popular in regions such as the Middle East, Australia, and Africa.

Triton-based platform underpins new model

According to Mitsubishi, the new-generation Pajero will be built on the robust ladder-frame platform used by the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, known as the L200 in some markets. However, the company says the SUV will feature model-specific development, including a unique cabin design and specially tuned front and rear suspension systems. The goal is to deliver both strong off-road capability and improved ride comfort suitable for everyday driving.

New flagship SUV for Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi is positioning the new Pajero as its flagship SUV, embodying the brand’s long-standing focus on adventure, durability, and all-terrain capability. While technical specifications, powertrain details, and market availability have not yet been announced, the use of the Triton’s ladder-frame architecture suggests the new Pajero will continue to target buyers seeking genuine off-road performance rather than adopting a crossover-based platform.

The announcement is significant for the Middle East, where the Pajero enjoyed decades of popularity thanks to its combination of reliability, desert-driving capability, and value. The nameplate remained a familiar sight across GCC roads long after production ended in several markets.

Global reveal expected in autumn 2026

Mitsubishi has released a teaser image showing the Pajero name illuminated beneath a distinctive LED lighting signature, offering the first glimpse of the upcoming model ahead of its official unveiling later this year. Further details are expected to be revealed closer to the world premiere in autumn 2026.

For enthusiasts who have been waiting for the return of one of Mitsubishi’s most iconic SUVs, the Pajero is finally making a comeback.
