Road Test: 2026 Haval H9

The 2026 Haval H9 arrives in the UAE as a completely fresh proposition, with a bold, boxy aesthetic that feels tailor-made for the region’s love of rugged SUVs. With no predecessor sold officially in the local market, this all-new model lands with a clean slate, aiming to disrupt the dominance of established Japanese family haulers by offering serious off-road hardware and a premium cabin at a price point that makes you look twice.

We tested the top-spec “Dignity” trim to see if this AED 129,900 contender can walk the walk in the competitive mid-size SUV segment.

Exterior

The H9’s design is unapologetically square, adopting a “retro-modern” look that fits right in with current trends. The front end features a massive chrome grille with horizontal slats, flanked by circular LED headlights set into square housings, a clear nod to classic off-roaders.

The profile is upright and functional, featuring a straight roofline that maximizes interior volume, while the rear is distinguished by vertically stacked taillights and a side-hinged tailgate carrying a full-size spare tyre. It’s a design that prioritizes presence and practicality, riding on 19-inch alloy wheels that fill the muscular arches well.

Interior & Tech

Stepping inside, the cabin is surprisingly mature and tech-heavy. The dashboard is dominated by a massive 14.6-inch floating touchscreen that controls most functions, paired with a clear digital instrument cluster.

Thankfully, ergonomics haven’t been sacrificed for style; a chunky physical gear lever and dedicated toggle switches for differential locks and drive modes remain on the center console.

The “Dignity” trim feels genuinely premium, offering Nappa leather seats that are heated, ventilated, and equipped with massage functions for the front passengers. Space is excellent thanks to the boxy shape, with ample headroom in all rows. The second row is spacious, and while the third row is best suited for children, it adds crucial versatility for larger families. The cabin is well-insulated, keeping wind and road noise to a minimum, and the 10-speaker sound system delivers crisp audio.

Drive & Performance

Under the hood, the H9 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, delivering 214 hp and 380 Nm of torque. This is mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

On the road, the powertrain is adequate for daily duties. The transmission shifts seamlessly, making city driving a breeze, though the engine has to work hard to move the 2.3-tonne kerb weight during aggressive highway overtaking. The suspension is tuned for comfort, soaking up speed bumps and expansion joints with ease, though this softness translates to noticeable body roll in tighter corners.

When the pavement ends, the H9 proves it’s more than just a mall crawler. It features a BorgWarner Torque-On-Demand 4WD system and comes equipped with locking differentials, giving it genuine capability in loose sand and technical terrain. The “Sand” drive mode effectively manages the power delivery, allowing it to keep pace with more expensive off-roaders in the dunes.

Verdict

The 2026 Haval H9 is a compelling entry into the UAE market. By offering a fully-loaded 7-seater with proper off-road gear for just AED 129,900, it undercuts the competition significantly while delivering a cabin experience that feels a class above. It may lack the engine displacement of some rivals, but as a value-packed, comfortable, and capable family SUV, it makes a very strong case for itself.
