Audi A7 Sportback 2011 attempts to fill niche

In their attempt to fill every possible niche with cars that looks pretty much the same, Volkswagen has launched the 2011 Audi A7 Sportback, a seemingly larger version of the A5 Sportback that is based on the A8 platform. The overall design is the usual copy-paste job that Audi is now famous for, with a slightly-distorted version of the A5’s rear end. And the engines are just the usual corporate VW fare.

Almost 5 metres long with a low roofline, the A7 Sportback is a full-sizer riding on 18-inch to 20-inch wheels, and as with all Audi sedans, really rides a front-wheel-drive platform, with optional “Quattro” all-wheel-drive tacked onto the higher trim levels. Even the lightest version of the aluminium-bodied A7 weighs 1695 kg, more than most midsize sedans but below most practical large sedans.

Initially offered with a choice of four V6 engines, two of them diesel, the base model gets a sickly 204 hp 2.8-litre V6 with front-wheel-drive and a CVT transmission all good for 0-100 kph in 8.3 seconds, while the apparent range-topper is a 300 hp supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with all-wheel-drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automanual all for an optimistic 0-100 kph time of 5.6 seconds. All trim levels also get start-stop technology, regenerative braking and a new electro-mechanical power steering system for slight fuel savings. Adaptive air suspension is optional.

Nothing else stands out on the tech front, except for a touchpad input system for the “MMI” infotainment system that integrates navigation and wireless internet.

The 2011 Audi A7 Sportback will reach European showrooms by September this year, which would mean a GCC release date is still a year or two off, given the lazy firm’s past release history in the UAE.

Keep track of updates in the Audi buyer guide.
