Mazda-based Fiat 124 Spider sports car revealed

Fiat 124 front

Fiat-Chrysler has just unveiled their small sports car, the fruit of a collaboration between Fiat and Mazda. The Fiat 124 Spider may be based on the Mazda MX-5, but it’s named and styled after the classic 124 Sport roadster from the late 1960s.

The chassis and identical interior are shared with the Mazda, but the Fiat is more than 100mm longer in the rear and 40 kg heavier, but comes with Fiat’s own slightly-more-powerful turbo engine. The 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine is standard, but it makes 140 hp and 240 Nm of toruqe in Europe whereas the American version has 160 hp and 249 Nm. The US-spec 124 Spider will be offered with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

An “extreme” Abarth version may be on its way though, most likely using some variant of the 240 hp 1.75-litre turbo engine from the 4C. It seems unlikely that the Spider will be offered in the GCC any time soon, although the Mazda MX-5 just went on sale in the UAE this month.

  1. This might just be the better looking one between the two. Nice

  2. it has got a more classic roadster look…not bad looking…hope it makes the same exhaust sound of abarth 500 which uses the same engine…

  3. as long as the engine and transmission is from Mazda…. this is going to do well

  4. Give me the option of 240hp and 1.7L engine with Turbo, and I’ll take a 124 Abarth right now. Sorry, forget the Mazda as far as I am concerned. 2.0L base model and still puts out less HP and Torque than Fiat’s 1.4L engine. Of course, that leaves a lot of engine to tune up and get more HP from, but that would set you back both time and money, and this isn’t the right part of the world to soup up Fiat’s in your garage! 🙂
