2022 Opel Astra is here with unique styling

Opel is slowly making a comeback in our market and if there is an Opel that most people know, it is the Opel Astra. The hatchback is a stylish alternative to the boring econobox sedans that it shares its rather steep price tag with. And now, a completely new 2022 Opel Astra arrives with underpinnings borrowed from its new family.

The 2022 Opel Astra is built on the platform shared with the Peugeot 308. This link forms out of the recent emergence of Stellantis, the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automotive and Peugeot S.A. This is the sixth generation of the Astra and it comes after an awful lot of time.

Similarities with the 308 are just skin deep as Opel has put their own design elements to the exterior and interior. The lines on the Astra are cleaner and more straightforward. Yet, they form a shape that is quite unique for this hatchback. The front end is decorated by matrix-LED headlamps with 84 LEDs per lamp. The new Astra has also grown over the old one, in length, width, and wheelbase.

The interior design exhibits a minimalist theme. Most conventional buttons are removed. The controls move to the 10-inch infotainment system, which is accompanied by a digital instrument cluster, yet another 10-inch screen. The 2022 Astra is loaded with tech like a 360-degree camera, heads-up display, and cruise control.

All the powertrain details are not public yet. But Opel has confirmed that the 2022 Astra will run with petrol and diesel engines. These engines will have power outputs ranging from 110 hp to 225 hp. There will also be a plug-in hybrid, which is not a surprise anymore. The gearbox choices include a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, depending on the engine chosen. With all these engines, this may be the final Astra with a combustion engine, if Opel sticks to their commitment of going EV-only by 2028 in Europe.

  1. Skin deep means the similarities are minimal. That’s not true though since the platform was designed by teams from both Peugeot and Opel/Vauxhall, so they probably share more than just the platform. You can even see they share the same gear selector..
