Mitsubishi has officially launched the Lancer Evolution X in Japan. The trims announced are the standard GSR model and the stripped-down RS model.

The new car uses a new 4B11 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine instead of the legendary 4G63 that has been in every Evo before it. The new motor is lighter thanks to an aluminum block, and more powerful. Oddly enough, the American version will have 295 hp and 406 Nm of torque, while the Japanese version has 276 hp and 422 Nm of torque. The American version will probably be sent to the GCC.

Transmissions for both the GSR and RS include a five-speed manual. Optional on only the GSR is the fancy new Twin Clutch SST 6-speed automated manual transmission that has no clutch pedal and provides smoother shifting.

All Lancer Evolution X GSR models are fitted with the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system to regulate drive torque and braking force at each wheel. The ACD (Active Center Differential) uses an electronically-controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch to optimize front/rear wheel torque split and thereby produce the best balance between traction and steering response. The AYC (Active Yaw Control) uses a torque transfer mechanism in the rear differential to control rear wheel torque differential for different driving conditions.

The GSR comes standard with 245/40 tyres on 18-inch Enkei 12-spoke high-rigidity cast alloy wheels. 18-inch BBS lightweight alloy wheels are also available as a factory-fitted option for GSR and add a luster finish.

The GSR also comes standard with Brembo front and rear ventilated disc brakes, Bilstein single-tube shock absorbers and Eibach coil springs.

Other features include dual front airbags, knee airbag for driver, optional side airbags, Recaro seats, cloth or optional leather trim, and standard adaptive front lighting system for the GSR. The RS loses the stereo, the rear wing and other weight-reducing items. We expect only the GSR to come to the Middle East.

Incidentally, the previous Evos sold here through the dealer never came with a factory warranty. The new ones will come to Dubai with a warranty.
