Eid Mubarak to everyone. I am sure you all will enjoy this long holiday to celebrate. Hope all those who went for Hajj come back safely. Before I disappear for the long break, let me sign off with a few interesting facts about the 2009 Nissan GT-R that you might not have heard before.

Already well-publicised, the new Nissan GT-R set an unofficial production car lap record at the famous Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, with a record time of 7 minutes 38 seconds in partially-wet conditions. Among recorded times, that makes it quicker around this track than the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Bugatti Veyron, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the Ferrari 599 GTB, the Ford GT and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. Among the only non-tuner cars quicker are the McLaren F1, the Koenigsegg CCR and the Porsche Carrera GT, all multi-million-dirham machines.

In a straight line, the GT-R can supposedly accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 3.6 seconds, which would make it as quick as a Porsche Carrera GT and a Ford GT, and quicker than the Corvette Z06, the Ferrari 599 GTB and the McLaren SLR. All this depends on driver and conditions of course.

The GT-R has a top speed of 310 kph, which is around that of 1984’s fastest production car in the world, made by Ferrari. Now a Nissan can play with classic exotics.

The Nissan GT-R’s new 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 engine is officially rated at 473 hp at 6400 rpm and 588 Nm from 3200 to 5200 rpm, both conservatively measured at the flywheel. A Japanese magazine, Best Car, measured a test car on a wheels-off dyno at 475 hp at 6115 rpm and 580 Nm of torque at 5130 rpm. Assuming a minimal drivetrain loss of 12%, the test GT-R is really making as much as 539 hp and 659 Nm of peak torque at the flywheel.

America’s most popular auto website, Edmunds.com, drove a GT-R and a 911 Turbo back-to-back, and said the US$70,000 GT-R easily has better handling than the US$100,000 Porsche.

Other tidbits? There will also be a lightweight Spec-V version for the street and a heavily-modded track version for various international racing events.

All in all, the “Skyline” GT-R is turning out to be a modern legend that isn’t confined to a handful of markets any more. It is definitely on my list of “Used” Cars To Buy Before I Die, alongside the Corvette Z06 and the BMW M3.

  1. eid mubarak to everyone. and thanks for those info. i hope you will be able to buy a new one and put it in the “new buyer guide”

  2. Seasons greetings all. For as long as street racing was prevalent in Dubai, the one car that had gained paramount street credit was none other that the Nissan Skyline GTR. But apart from the speed, twin turbo and ‘look at me’ design of the car, what appealed to me most about the car was its lack of abundance. I fear with the new, more commercialised model, being rare would be a thing of the past.

  3. eid mubarak to all.with the GT-R,i think it is going to be a great holiday.a phonemal car.tanx to CARLOS GHOSON.
