BMW 1-Series 2012 hatchback unveiled

This is the 2012 BMW 1-Series hatchback. The design might look like a photoshopped joke, but this really is how the new generation of the smallest BMW looks. And it doesn’t bode well for future BMW designs.

At launch, the only petrol engines on offer are two versions of the 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the Mini. The BMW 116i will have a 136 hp variant, while the 118i will have a 170 hp one. The standard gearbox will be a 6-speed manual, while an 8-speed automatic is optional on this rear-wheel-drive sub-compact.

Other new features include a better interior, longer wheelbase, automatic stop/start, an optional gearshift indictor on manual versions, brake energy recuperation, low rolling resistance tyres and electric steering.

While this German-built hatchback looks like a simple unfortunate facelift, it really is a complete redesign that will spawn future models such as a 3-door hatchback, a coupe, a convertible and maybe even a sedan.

Keep track of GCC updates in the BMW 1-Series buyer guide.

  2. Wow!
    1 series looking dis gud
cant wait to see wat dey have done to da 3 series coupe 😀

  3. I kinda liked the front but not the back……

  4. Oh my! Luv the interior…but the front… looks like a mouse… such a shame, was looking forward to this.

  5. Like a giant Computer mouse on wheels..

What happened to bmw’s mature businessman designs? Now they seem bored and are clowning around..

  6. I didnt like it in the first instance but i guess it work another look..the interior is amazing but that would be for a price of an entry level lexus..:P..most of the trims will not include pop up screens i believe..Shocking design but yet diffferent and distinctive

  7. I miss chris bangle 🙁

  8. For the first time, i am laughing at a beemer !! These are sad days ;(

  9. Have to admit the interior is a step in the right direction for a beemer, but im sure most of it are options and the base interior will be nothing like this. Specing one like this, will probably bring it in range of a 3 series, which is overpriced as well.

  10. I find that BMW is trying to stir controversy with this design more than anything else..

I find that there is some remarkable retro touch in this car’s exterior design… Its steering far from mainstream cliche’ wedge shaped designs to a more curvous bubbly physique..

Excuse the usage of sophisticated language..:P

  11. wow itz awesome

  12. I have looked at dis 1series which at 1st left me speechless. Then I saw its short film for about 5times to observe better. Now I have decided to put a deposit on a white 116d sport line. The interior has definitly captured me and overall I also like the exterior.
In my younger days I remember similar negative comments to the Merc 190d but then people got used to the controversial rear end & it sold in modest numbers.
I recommend the short film by Carscoop. Please remeber that it’s D only rearwheel drive hatchback in its class in the world.

  13. amazing car thumbs up
