Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept hints at future styling

Volkswagen has unveiled the Cross Coupe concept at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, supposedly showcasing VW’s future design direction. It might also be gauging interest in a “four-door coupe-crossover” for all we know.

Under this four-seater’s bonnet is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 148 hp “TSI” petrol engine with two electric motors that develop 54 hp and 114 hp. This gives a maximum output of 262 hp, which enables it to do the 0-100 kph run in 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 201 kph. In terms of efficiency, the Cross Coupe can apparently manage 2.7 litres/100 km. The concept also has a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that allows it to travel approximately 40 km on electricity alone.

So now you know what sort of face next year’s new VW models are going to get.
