BMW has officially released the 2016 X1, their smallest crossover SUV offering.

The new exterior of the X1 follows the new corporate design, which includes a front fascia with a prominent grille featuring LED headlights. Other highlights of the exterior are plasic body clading, a sloping roof and a rear tailgate mounted spoiler.

Standard interior features include cloth seats, silver trim and high-gloss black accents. It also gets an iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display. Higher models get expensive leather seats and high quality wood trims.

Different styling packages are on offer as well. The ‘M Sport’ package features a bodykit and 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels. Inside, it gets cloth and Alcantara sports seats, aluminium trim and matte blue accents.

Safety features for the new X1 include an optional heads-up display and a Driving Assistant Plus package that adds Active Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking.

Under the hood, the X1 gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with two different tunes. The standard petrol engine produces about 192 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while the higher model churns out 228 hp and 350 Nm of torque. A new base engine will be available later on, which is a turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder motor producing about 134 hp. All models are available with a 8-speed automatic transmission.

The new X1 however loses its rear-wheel drive characteristics, with BMW now opting to put their new front-wheel drive setup on it as standard. Higher models get optional all-wheel drive.

The 2016 BMW X1 should probably come to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other GCC countries by early next year.

Keep track of the latest prices and updates in the BMW X1 buyer guide.

    very well done, BMW!!

  4. reminds me of the sportage, tuscon? Its all the rage at the moment, these small premium cuv’s. If the rage ever got to me, the macan is the one i would get.

  5. If this is front wheel drive now then wat are we paying extra for? Same as Kia, CRV and all then.

  6. Kia Sportage may be the original Crossover vehicle…It first came out last 1993…Then toyota came up with Rav4 1995…everybody else copied the concept.

  7. Hi
I have noticed that its mentioned in the x1 price page that the first bad thing about this car is rear legroom which has improved for 2016 model year
