The Volkswagen Tiguan GTE concept debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show last September. For the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, they have brought in a slightly modified version of this model, called the Tiguan GTE Active Concept.

The powertrain remains the same which is a plug-in hybrid unit coupled to a 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup. A 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 148 hp is used along with two electric motors. The front axle receives 54 hp from one of them while the other provides 114 hp to the rear axle.

The AWD setup in the GTE active lets the car switch between AWD, FWD or even RWD. The Tiguan offers 32 km of electric-only range while the petrol tank gives it a hike to 933 km. The TSI engine also helps in charging the batteries which can also be charged externally. This whole tech-wizardry propels the Tiguan GTE Active from 0-100 kph in around 6.6 seconds and will take it to 193 kph, courtesy of a combined output of 221 hp. A 6-speed Dual Clutch automatic gearbox handles this power and channels it to both the axles.

Inside the cabin, the Tiguan gets a 9.2-inch touchscreen as a part of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Platform which offers Mirror Link, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay connectivity. An all digital instrument console compliments this system. The overall design of the dashboard includes a Dragon Red exterior coloured strip on the A/C air vent which accentuates the brushed aluminium trim.

The Tiguan GTE Active Concept is a reminder of what the North American version of the upcoming Tiguan will look like. A longer wheelbase and seven seats will differentiate it from its European cousin. Late-2016 will mark the beginning of the Tiguan’s production from the Puebla factory in Mexico.
