RUF CTR Yellowbird rides again as new 2017 model

Porsche fanboys will know of RUF’s long history with the German carmaker. RUF actually builds and sells Porsche so heavily modified that they are listed as an independent carmaker in Germany. One of their most famous creations was the RUF CTR Yellowbird back in the late 80s. RUF has dug up the past to build a new RUF CTR Yellowbird, but not in the way you think.

On the anniversary of the original 469 hp CTR’s debut, the new Yellowbird — on display at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show — apparently has almost nothing shared with the 964-generation Porsche that its look is based on.

The carbon-fibre monocoque structure was developed in-house, according to RUF. Attached to the monocoque are steel crash structures front and rear. The lightweight chassis allows the finished car to have a “dry weight” of 1200 kg. Suspension consists of double-wishbone control arms actuating pushrod shock absorbers. The front brakes are six-piston fixed calipers, while the rear are four-piston units.

The rear-mounted engine is a 3.6-litre Porsche-derived flat-six, twin-turbocharged and making 710 horsepower at 6750 rpm and 880 Nm of torque from 2750 to 4000 rpm. It is rear-wheel-driven and uses a 6-speed manual transmission. It takes 3.5 seconds to do the 0-100 kph run, and 9 seconds to hit 200 kph. Its top speed is 360 kph.

The interior is minimalist and lightweight, with Alcantara and carbon fibre trim, and analogue gauges. However, it will come with modern safety features such as ABS and traction control.

Only 29 CTR Yellowbirds were made in the late 80s. RUF is making only 30 of these new ones. Almost all of them are apparently sold already, at a cost of almost Dhs 3 million each.
