2018 Honda Accord debuts with turbo engines

The all-new 2018 Honda Accord was just revealed in the United States. Slated to hit U.S. showrooms in late 2017, the new Accord looks like a liftback, but is actually a sedan with a larger cabin and a smaller boot opening.

The 10th-generation Honda Accord is new from the ground up and features a lighter and more rigid body structure and two all-new direct-injection turbo engines, the world’s first 10-speed automatic transmission for a front-drive car, and a new generation of Honda’s two-motor hybrid technology as an option, along with a host of new safety, driver-assistive and connected-car technologies, not all of which is likely to be offered in the limited GCC market.

The lighter new Accord features a longer wheelbase, a lower overall height and wider body, with wider wheel tracks, a shortened overall length and lower seating position. The longer wheelbase allowed designers to move the second-row seats substantially rearward, giving Accord more rear leg room to offer one of the most spacious rear seating areas in its class.

The 2018 Honda Accord cabin also features an all-new HMI that includes an ultra-slim 7-inch TFT driver’s meter and a new 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface with physical volume and tuning knobs and more intuitive, smartphone-like features and functionality including customizable app tiles and home-screen shortcuts, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Accord also will offer the next-generation of HondaLink telematics with new capabilities including emergency roadside assistance, remote locking/unlocking and engine start, stolen vehicle tracking, remote diagnostics, geofencing, speed tracking and more.

Touring trims also feature a new 6-inch driver’s Head Up Display with selectable information, including speed, engine rpm, turn-by-turn navigation, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Additional new or improved connected-car technologies available on the 2018 Accord include wireless device charging, automatic Bluetooth® phone pairing with Near Field Communication technology, 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi-enabled over-the-air system updates.

Audio systems vary by trim, starting with 4 speakers and 160 watts on LX, 8 speakers and 180 watts on Sport and EX trims, and 10 speakers and 450 watts on EX-L and Touring trims. All models feature USB charging ports along with Bluetooth connectivity.

The 2018 Honda Accord features three new powerplants. The first of them is a new 1.5-litre, 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbo with dual Variable Timing Control (dual VTC) that produces a peak 192 hp at 5,500 rpm and 260 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 5,000 rpm, replacing the 2.4-litre engine, but still mated to a CVT as standard or, in Sport trim, to a CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Accord can also be equipped with a new 2.0-litre 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbo with i-VTEC and paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission or, in Sport trim, to the aforementioned automatic or an optional 6-speed manual. The new 2.0-litre turbo, supposedly sharing much of its design with the 315 hp Civic Type R, produces 252 hp at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm in the Accord, less power and more torque than the 3.5-litre V6 that it replaces.

An all-new Accord Hybrid is also available with a two-motor hybrid system that will utilise a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle engine paired with Honda-developed electric motors. The Accord two-motor system operates without the need for a conventional automatic transmission. Additionally, the hybrid battery pack and its control systems are now mounted under the rear floor instead of in the trunk and thus preserving cargo space, and also allowing for a 60/40-split folding rear seat, finally standard on all models and trims as the outgoing model didn’t have one.

For 2018, all US-spec Accords will feature the full suite of Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard equipment. Honda Sensing includes Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and new Traffic Sign Recognition. Additional available driver-assistive technologies include Blind Spot Information, front and rear parking sensors, Cross Traffic Monitor and Driver Awareness Monitor; and all models feature a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with dynamic guidelines.

Standard advanced active and passive safety systems include Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control, Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), advanced front airbags, driver and front-passenger side airbags and new driver and front-passenger knee airbags.

More detailed information will be provided closer to launch, but the 1.5-litre powered Accord will be available in six trims – LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi and Touring. The 2.0-litre model has four trims available, which are Sport, EX-L, EX-L Navi and Touring. And the new Accord Hybrid will be available in five trims — Hybrid, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi and Touring. There will be no Coupe or V6 models any more.

The Accord will be built in the United States, and is likely to debut in the GCC by early next year. It remains to be seen if the turbo engines, new gearbox options and hybrid model are offered in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other local markets.

  1. Correction
    9th gen accord

  2. Looks like Accord Crosstour… Interior is Awesome!!! But miss the dual screen..

  3. No V6, no coupe ?!

But also no Civic Type R in GCC, and for sure no future Accord type R.

What cool / funny / engaging cards do we have in UAE now from Honda? Nothing, anymore.

Honda in GCC just made its most boring lineup ever and cutting ties with a part of its clientele.

If I want a Jap V6 coupe, I can go only to Lexus (too heavy and crazy price) or Infinity (very sexy I have to say).

    Honda is abandoning me.

Good new is? My V6 coupe will increase in value now !

  4. No more coupe or sporty vehicle in GCC.

    And I now owe a Classic haha 🙂 Coupe V6 2013

  5. It’s sad truth Honda’s best cars with better specs are not introduced in the GCC, envy those in the USA.
The regional office does not do proper research, and afraid to take economic risk.

    • did u see specs for v6 2017 accord on sale at moment i beleive except one or two options all r US specs in 4 cylinder is where futaim fucks up!

  6. 2017 Accord EX-L front end looks way better.2018 Accord looks like a cross between Honda and Toyota. No 6 cyl! What were they thinking? My 2016 Honda Accord EX-L with the 6 cyl looks much better, especially the front end.

  7. Strange they abandoned the Coupe!! it was easily a unicorn. Hope they replace it one day..Prelude anyone?

  8. Dashboard resembles that of Mazda 6 ?

  9. Looks better than a Camry and Altima.

  10. hilarious rear design, i like the front though.

still, the new altima is far ahead of this thing imho

  11. It is only me or the bulging front part reminds everyone of Mazda and back lights looks like a better version of altima… IMO, i like current generation, it looks sleek and elegant… Honda giving up on gear lever and opting for buttons…. hope they pricing remains same rather than going into luxury sedans price bracket

  12. Its a bigger civic

  13. Hi Mashfique.

Any news to when the official launch is in UAE? Also, the Turbo coming to us or once again we should embrace disappointment?

  14. Any idea when turbocharged engine accord will be launched in UAE?

  15. When it will be available in UAE ????

  16. For all the people worried about Honda ditching the V6, the 2.0T on this accord is quicker than the current V6, watch the drag race between them

  17. Can anyone tell me what cars come with anti collision technology as standard for GCC Spec vehicles. Thanks in advance.
