Electrified 2019 Mercedes Benz E53 AMG replaces petrol E43

The Mercedes Benz E-Class range received an update at its performance end where the E43 AMG 4MATIC models were replaced by the more mental E53 AMG models. The new model, offered in sedan and wagon body styles will, according to Mercedes, “an entrance into the world of AMG.” However, there is one shocking difference.

Powering the E53 AMG sedan and wagon is a biturbo 3.0-litre inline-6 engine with an EQ Boost electric auxiliary compressor. The total output of the combo is 429 hp and 520 Nm. This slots the E53 AMG right between the non-AMG E-Class models, the sportiest of which makes 329 hp, and the bloodthirsty E63 AMG that churns out 603 hp. The engine is paired to a 9-speed AMG Speedshift transmission with Mercedes’ 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

The drivetrain combo allows the E53 AMG to rush all the way to 270 kph. The new models are different-looking from the E43 models as well. The bulging hood, larger 20-inch AMG wheels and other subtle updates give it a fresh appeal. Inside, unique sport seats with red stitching, AMG performance steering wheel, and the optional widescreen cockpit raises the ante.

It remains to be seen if these mild-hybrid models are actually better performers in real life, or just weighed down by batteries in the name of marketing “progress.” Expect the new nameplate to land in UAE, KSA and GCC by the end of the year.
