Nissan to Launch New Micra and LEAF EV in 2025, JUKE EV in 2026
Nissan is charging ahead with its electrification plans, confirming the launch of two all-new electric vehicles for 2025. This includes a revived Micra and a next-generation LEAF, along with an updated version of its e-POWER hybrid tech. A fully electric JUKE is also in the pipeline, expected to debut in fiscal year 2026.
Nissan Micra Returns as an All-Electric Hatchback
The popular Micra nameplate will make a comeback in 2025 as a fully electric hatchback. Designed at Nissan Design Europe in London, the new Micra will ride on the AmpR Small platform. This is the same architecture underpinning Renault’s upcoming R5 EV.
The compact EV will be offered with two battery options: a 40kWh and a 52kWh pack. This will provide a max driving range of over 400 km on a full charge. Production will take place at the Ampere ElectriCity plant in Douai, France. Sales in Europe are expected to begin before the end of 2025.
The Micra was quite the rental-favourite during recent times in the UAE. With the new one going EV, it will definitely cost a lot more than the previous gen.
Third-Gen LEAF Brings Sleeker Looks, More Range
Also arriving in 2025 is the third generation of the LEAF, a model that kicked off the mainstream EV movement back in 2010. The new LEAF is said to adopt a more aerodynamic design and will be based on the CMF-EV platform. It is the same one used by the Nissan Ariya.
The European-spec LEAF will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK, which is being transformed into a major EV manufacturing hub under the automaker’s EV36Zero initiative.
The Nissan Leaf has been teased in the GCC a few times but never made it here, along with the Ariya.
e-POWER Tech Gets a Kaizen Upgrade
Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid system, first introduced in Europe in 2022, is also getting an update this year. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “Kaizen” (continuous improvement), the upgraded e-POWER system will be more efficient and refined.
e-Power uses a petrol engine to charge the electric motor, instead of having to plugin to the electric charger, thereby eliminating range anxiety.
The tech will continue to feature on models like the Qashqai and X-Trail, and Nissan has already sold nearly 250,000 e-POWER equipped vehicles across Europe.
Nissan JUKE electric Coming in 2026
Looking further ahead, Nissan is working on the third generation of its JUKE crossover. It will debut as a pure electric vehicle in fiscal year 2026.
The upcoming JUKE EV is expected to draw design inspiration from the bold-looking Hyper Punk concept showcased at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
Verdict
The fact that the new Micra and Leaf will both be built in Europe makes it highly unlikely they will come to the UAE or GCC anytime soon. The e-POWER models could potentially work in the GCC better as it not dependent on electric chargers.
