Driving tips: What to do in the rain

toyota-fj-cruiser-water

Suddenly, the rainy season is upon us, and as usual, no one has any idea what to do when it’s pouring hard in a storm. There isn’t much that needs to be known beyond some common sense.

  • Slow down.
  • Leave earlier, because you will drive slowly.
  • Avoid sudden braking. Use the brakes as lightly as possible.
  • Leave longer safe distance from the car in front, since you are braking lightly.
  • Don’t use cruise control, or the car might accelerate by itself if it hits a puddle.
  • Stay away from the edges of the road, namely the first and last lanes, as water builds up there.
  • Turn on your headlights. Turn on foglights too if you have them. Fog lamps weren’t meant for retards to just look cool in clear weather.
  • Stay away from buses and trucks, as their big tyres spray water.
  • Turn on the defog feature in your a/c to avoid fogging up your windshield.
  • Slow down a fair bit when driving over puddles, as the car might slip-and-slide if the water is too deep. Avoid splashing water.
  • If the front-end of your car slips, quit panicking and keep the steering straight, while staying off the brakes and easing off the accelerator.
  • After you splash through a puddle, lightly press the brakes to remove water off the discs.
  • Avoid sideways-running water or if you can’t see the ground under the water. Your car’s electronics will fry if it is too deep. Your tyres will lose grip if you start floating. If water goes in through the air intake, your engine will die.
  • Try to drive on the ‘tracks’ created through the water by the car in front.
  • If you end up in the middle of a flood, keep the engine revving so water does not go in through the exhaust pipe.

  3. Good pointers Mr. Mashfi 😉

  4. Also don’t put hazards light all the way Unnecessarily and use emirates road its open don’t make my way home choke… 🙂

  5. and the last tip:
    * stay away from sharjah

  6. ROFL! the fog lamps poin!….. 😀

  7. Thanks Mash. Great tips. I was surprised by how simple yet essential they are. I guess we don’t think of them because we have little experience driving under such conditions here.

  8. TURN OFF YOUR HAZARD LIGHTS!! its the button with the red triangle for those who dont know

TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS so others can see you in their rearview mirror.

im sure the people reading drivearabia have the common sense to know all this. its the other retards that we should get this message across somehow. especially all the Pathan drivers and the toyota hiace, nissan sunny, corolla, landcruiser, patrol drivers

  9. I thought mash would say get a Cayenne as the last point..

  10. last tip is stupid!

STUPID its the INTAKE not the EXHAUST that will cause the car to stall…you just keep it around 1-2 rpm and it has enough pressure to disperse water!!!! but if you get that water in your intake you will chock the car n stall it!

  11. Author

Yes!!! STUPID I say!!!! STUPID!!! But read up on backpressure.

  12. Relax Mash, you’ve given us your tips which are highly appreciated, let ‘moaz’ take his car to Sharjah for a sail and test out his claim 😉

  13. .. and I agree with Cyanide and chris.
In times of fog and heavy rain, use only headlights and not hazards.

  14. If you have to drive through deep water select L on the auto trans and drive slowly. the high engine revs will keep the exhaust clear and low gear will stop you going too fast.

    ^ true

  16. and mainly stay in lane and stop choking traffic at the lane drop… a stupid idiot tried to match his corolla with my tank… he ended up with a broken mirror. Mainly if it rains… it rains for EVERYBODy and EVERYBODY IS LATE FOR WORK OR HOME. I “LOVE” morons who flash people when raining. lots of calm and legal distance between cars.

  17. my front fogs are always on…no matter whthr its foggy, rainy or clear weather! :D..i turn ’em off only when i drive on roads which is a two-way where thre are no treet lights and is pitch dark – like the dibba-masafi road so that oncoming cars wudnt hav a strain!

  18. I don’t have an L in auto What to do…>)

  19. if u dont hav L,

then drive on D2, if urs is a 4 dpeed gear box thn u wl hav D3, D2 atleast,,

    Vivek,
FOG lamps do not strain on the on comming cars, u can put thm on, as they are meant to go thru FOG, and their trajectory in towards the ground, not on the face of the oncomming cars,
it is recommended to on the FOG lamps on the Dibba, Khorfakkan / masafi roads, as its is a ghat section drive.
only High beam goes on to the face of comming driver.
Mash good guidelines, indeed allof us know it, but a reminder is better,,thanks

  20. Just get a Boat. 🙂

  21. Fog lights are called fog lights because they are meant to use in foggy weather. Yes, we know ur car has fog lights, u don’t have to show them off by keeping them on all the tine…unless u r 18 years old

  22. the AUTOMATIC transmission cars can not be easily control in the middle of heavy or deep water so if som1 in front of you and traffic jam bumper to bumper traffic plz press the race peddle little high more accelerating the car this will not stop your engine to work if you only press brake so the race of the car is less and in that case you end up with engine stop or malfunction push the brake peddle too tight and accelerate but not too much this will cause burn out

  23. basically calling me a fool? ^_o

  24. nice to drive this rain i love to drive in raian

  25. I think the point of the fog lights needs to be explained in more detail. These lights should only be turned on if visibility falls below 50 meters. Your maximum speed should then be 50km/h. I see lots of people driving with their rear fog lights on. Either they don’t know what they do or they think it’s cool to have them on.

Another point are the tires. Check your profile depth regularly and replace your tires every 3 years or when they wear down to 1.6mm.
