Volkswagen Polo hatchback debuts with 2014 facelift

VW Polo
The VW Polo in its hatchback form, is a sub-compact which bade the GCC market goodbye just a few couple of years ago. However, it did continue its life in its home continent and some select markets, and has just received a facelift for 2014 which includes powertrain updates and more engine choices.

The new Polo conforms to Volkswagen’s current obsession for design simplicity and plain looks, a move in stark contrast to the present era of “fluidic” sculptures and “kinetic” themes, although there is nothing to nitpick about. The real change however, is under the hood. The all-new Polo will be available with a choice of two petrol engines –- a turbocharged 1-litre motor rated at 90 hp, and a 1.2-litre unit available in six different power configurations, with output ranging from 60 hp in the basic trim, to 192 hp in the top GTi trim, besides featuring direct-injection, multi-point fuel-injection, turbochargers, active cylinder management, start-stop system, and regenerative brake mode, all in various higher models. A 3-cylinder 1.4-litre turbo-diesel motor will also be offered in the European market in up to three different power configurations, with power output ranging from 75 hp to 192 hp.

Other notable additions in the VW Polo include several safety and driver-assistance systems usually found in the premium vehicles, such as adjustable dampers, driver alert system, traffic monitoring system and city emergency braking systems working in conjunction with adaptive cruise control, rear camera, a new infotainment system, LED headlights, and so on.

At the moment, there is no word on whether the new Polo hatchback will make a re-entry in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or any other GCC ever since it left the market to the cheaper Indian-built Polo Sedan here.

Keep track of prices and specs for the entire range in the VW buyer guide.
