2018 Ford Expedition debuts with aluminium body

The Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that has not changed a lot since 2003. But Ford has completely overhauled their family hauler for the 2018 model year. The new Ford Expedition is now being showcased at the on-going Chicago Motor Show and it is a completely new model from the ground up.

The new model has grown in length, while the long wheelbase model has been renamed the Expedition Max. It uses an all-aluminium body that helps the new model to shed 136 kg despite the growth in length. The Expedition also offers wheels sizes from 17 to 22 inches.

A completely revised front end evokes the design of Ford’s pickup range with the ‘C’ shaped headlights flanking the massive mesh grille. From the side, it looks as if Ford literally had the competition in mind while they penned the beltline. At the rear, the blackened D-pillars give an impression of wraparound windows. The oversized tail lamps are connected by a chrome slat with the Expedition name on it.

The engine choices are not clear yet but the 3.5-litre EcoBoost in the current 2017 model will continue to do duty for sure. The outputs may be hiked a bit though. In the outgoing model, this power plant makes 365 hp. The 10-speed automatic already offered with the F-150 and the Mustang may replace the existing 6-speed unit. Engine stop-start system will be standard.

The 2018 Ford Expedition will go on sale this September in the United States. Expect a UAE, KSA and GCC debut by summer next year.

  1. Seems like an F-150 front and interior with Explorer rear end. Waiting the full review!

  2. I think the mpg will better than taho

  3. IMO, the Expedition was the best SUV in value for money, because it was the best people hauler, a surprisingly good dune-basher, a comfortable cruiser, not overpriced like the Yukon, and had simple and reliable parts that could run 300000km with ease.

However, the addition of that massive lip spoiler is going to ruin its off-road ability. It’s a key design flaw that turns any able 4×4 into a glorified minivan. Furthermore, I still do not have faith in turbocharged engines for the long run. I have yet to see one survive for 10 years in the Middle East. It would be much appreciated if Ford gave buyers an option to choose the naturally aspirated 5.0 engine used in the F150.

I really hope that Ford will come out with an off-roading version of the Expedition, or else this will be one of the final nails in the coffin of truck-based SUV off-roaders. It would be criminal to be resigned to just a Nissan Patrol or a Land Cruiser as a large, semi-luxurious, all-round SUV.

  4. Hopefully Ford can shake off the rust blues. If it does, it will shake off the GM and Chrysler competition as well. Their engines are superior. They do have a bit of work on their electrical systems and please finally resolve the power steering pump issues.

  5. value for money will probably be top-notch again, but this new rear design looks ugly IMHO. nice front though
