Toyota bZ7 EV sedan debuts with Huawei tech at Shanghai Motor Show

Toyota has officially unveiled the bZ7 all-electric sedan at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show, marking its first production EV under the GAC-Toyota joint venture to feature Huawei’s HarmonyOS cockpit system. The sleek electric four-door is set for a full launch later this year, with development led by a “Regional Chief Engineer” tailored explicitly for the Chinese market.

First previewed in concept form at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show, the version shown in Shanghai is the final production model of the bZ7 — and it’s loaded with high-tech features aimed at competing in China’s fast-growing EV segment.

Up front, the bz7 features Toyota’s now-familiar slim C-shaped through-type headlights integrated into a closed fascia. A roof-mounted lidar sensor hints at high-level ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) capabilities, which may include Huawei’s ADS system, given the existing partnership on the HarmonyOS in-cabin tech.

The side profile of the bZ7 presents a coupe-like shape with a gently sloping roofline that flows into a subtle rear wing. Semi-hidden door handles and 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels add a sporty edge, though the production version ditches the concept car’s digital mirrors in favour of traditional ones. Physical door handles have also replaced the flush-mounted concept design.

At the rear, the bZ7 sports full-width taillights, a high-mounted brake light, and a small aerodynamic wing, adding to the car’s dynamic stance.

Inside the cabin, the tech-forward theme continues. There’s a floating central infotainment screen, an embedded digital instrument cluster, and a three-spoke steering wheel. Wireless charging pads are integrated into the centre console, and ambient lighting accents various parts of the cabin for a more premium feel. A panoramic sunroof completes the interior setup.

Although powertrain details have not yet been disclosed, the bZ7 is expected to slot above the existing bZ3X and bZ4X models sold in China, likely offering improvements in range, performance, and intelligent driving features.

Toyota’s bZ series is part of a broader push into the Chinese EV market, where competition is fierce and tech partnerships have become essential. The addition of Huawei’s HarmonyOS cockpit is a strategic move, as buyers in the region place increasing importance on connected car systems.

The GAC-Toyota joint venture is already seeing solid performance. In Q1 2025, the JV recorded 171,477 vehicle sales, with 66,066 units sold in March alone, marking a 19.3% year-on-year increase.
