Toyota Land Cruiser FJ

2026 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Cruiser launched

Toyota has officially unveiled the much-anticipated Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-roader that brings back the spirit of adventure in a smaller and more accessible package. The new model will make its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month, ahead of its market launch in Japan around mid-2026.

The Land Cruiser FJ is smaller than the Land Cruiser Prado, measuring 4574mm long, 1854mm tall, and 1961mm wide, with a 2581mm wheelbase, roughly 279mm shorter than its larger sibling. The SUV shares its platform with the Toyota Hilux, combining rugged utility with compact proportions ideal for both city use and off-road exploration.

Under the hood, the FJ is powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine producing 161 hp and 245 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system. While the power figures lean towards practicality rather than performance, Toyota’s focus here is clearly on reliability and capability across varied terrain.

Toyota has also emphasised customisation and durability. Like the Hilux Champ, the FJ offers Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment, or MOLLE panels for attaching outdoor gear, and the SUV can be fitted with accessories such as a snorkel for water crossings. The front and rear corner bumpers are removable and replaceable, allowing damaged sections to be swapped out easily, an approach aimed at lowering repair costs and improving serviceability.

Design-wise, the Land Cruiser FJ stays true to Toyota’s off-road heritage. The boxy silhouette, round LED headlights, chunky wheel arches, and rear-mounted spare tyre echo the design of classic Land Cruisers while keeping a modern, youthful appeal. Inside, the cabin follows Toyota’s latest design language with a large central touchscreen, robust gear selector, and a functional, upright dashboard layout built for rugged use.

In addition to the FJ, Toyota is also developing the “Land Hopper”, an electric off-road vehicle designed to explore areas “beyond where the Land Cruiser can take you.” Details about the Land Hopper remain scarce, with Toyota yet to announce a launch timeline.

With the debut of the Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota expands its legendary Land Cruiser lineup into new territory, a smaller, versatile 4×4.

The FJ Cruiser nameplate enjoyed much success in this part of the world. Bringing it back to the region only makes sense. However, will this be another case of the Nissan Xterra? The Xterra was another popular nameplate that returned here but never really reached the heights of success enjoyed by the previous generation, one of the key reasons being the smaller engine displacement.

Comments

  1. I like the design

  2. Slick and durable, ruggedity top notch.
How i wish i can have one for a ride.

  3. I cannot wait to see the new 2026 version of the FJCruiser. I bought a 2007 when they first came out and loved it. My big regret is that I traded it on 2016 for a Honda. It was in great shape, no problems and I loved it. I’ll be looking for the new one and will test drive it as soon as it comes out!!

  4. Rubbish product . Bad move Toyota 🤦🏻‍♂️

  5. Why are the measurements in inches not universal metric? We are in the UAE not USA or India.
