Volkswagen unveils new EV models and AI-driven mobility strategy ahead of Beijing Auto Show

Volkswagen Group has revealed a major expansion of its electrified and smart vehicle portfolio during its Media Night ahead of the Beijing Auto Show 2026, showcasing four global premieres and outlining its next phase of technology-led growth in China.

The announcement highlights Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” strategy, with new models and technologies specifically developed to meet local market demands, particularly in the fast-evolving EV and intelligent mobility space.

Four global premieres lead EV push

Headlining the showcase is the Volkswagen ID. AURA T6, a mid-size fully electric SUV developed by FAW-Volkswagen. As the first model in the new ID. AURA series, it is built on the locally developed China Electronic Architecture (CEA), enabling advanced Level 2 driver assistance and over-the-air (OTA) updates.

On the premium side, Audi revealed the AUDI E7X, a fully electric SUV developed for China. Featuring quattro all-wheel drive and power outputs of up to 500 kW, the E7X combines performance with advanced digital architecture and is expected to introduce Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities in the future.

Largest electrification rollout in China

Volkswagen Group says this marks its largest electrification offensive in China to date, covering battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended-range vehicles.

The company plans to introduce:

  • Around 30 electrified models by 2027
  • Up to 50 electrified models by 2030
  • Approximately 30 fully electric vehicles within that portfolio

This rapid rollout is supported by strong local R&D capabilities and partnerships, allowing faster development cycles and localisation of key technologies.

Focus on advanced driver assistance and software

A key part of Volkswagen’s strategy is the integration of locally developed advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Its in-house technology unit has already delivered Level 2 advanced systems with features such as highway and urban navigation on autopilot, along with automated parking functions.

Several upcoming models launching later this year will feature these enhanced ADAS capabilities as standard.

“Agentic AI for All” roadmap

Alongside the new vehicles, Volkswagen introduced its “Agentic AI for All” roadmap, marking a shift toward AI-defined vehicles.

Future models built on the CEA platform will feature an onboard AI system powered by a locally trained large language model. Unlike traditional voice assistants, the system is designed to understand user intent, perform multi-step actions, and interact naturally with occupants.

The AI system will operate entirely within the vehicle, ensuring data privacy while enabling more advanced, context-aware functionality.

Regional relevance

While these newly unveiled models are primarily targeted at the Chinese market, they offer a clear preview of Volkswagen Group’s future direction globally. The focus on AI integration, advanced software architecture, and high levels of driver assistance is expected to influence upcoming models in international markets, including the UAE and GCC.

With increasing competition in the EV space locally, such developments could shape the next generation of Volkswagen electric vehicles offered in the region.
