Nissan Terrano Makes Comeback at Beijing Auto Show
At Bejing Auto Show 2026, Nissan revealed two new NEV (New Energy Vehicle) SUV concepts, underlining its accelerated electrification strategy and the growing importance of China as both a key market and a global innovation hub.
The Japanese automaker used the Beijing show to showcase its evolving SUV direction, with both concepts previewing future production models expected within the next year.
Two new electrified SUV concepts
Leading the reveal is the Urban SUV PHEV Concept, aimed at younger buyers. It blends Nissan’s latest electrification tech with a design language influenced by upcoming models such as the NX8, focusing on usability in daily city driving while maintaining a modern, tech-heavy appeal.
Alongside it, Nissan brought back a familiar name with the Terrano PHEV Concept. This model leans more toward lifestyle and adventure use, combining plug-in hybrid tech with off-road-inspired design. The idea is to balance urban practicality with weekend capability, something that still resonates in markets like the Middle East.

Both concepts are expected to transition into production models within 12 months, suggesting Nissan is moving quickly to expand its electrified SUV lineup.
China at the centre of Nissan’s strategy
Nissan also used the event to reinforce its broader vision, “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” positioning China as one of its three core global markets alongside Japan and the United States.
The strategy is two-fold:
-
China serves as a major domestic sales market
-
It also acts as a global R&D and export hub
This approach is already visible, with recent models like the N7, Frontier Pro PHEV, N6 and NX8 forming part of Nissan’s expanding NEV portfolio. Some of these models are planned for export to regions including Latin America, ASEAN, and the Middle East.
What it means for the region
While these concepts are China-focused for now, Nissan has confirmed that certain future models, including derivatives of the Terrano PHEV, are being considered for global markets.
Given the UAE’s growing demand for electrified SUVs, especially plug-in hybrids that balance range and convenience, these developments could eventually translate into new offerings for the GCC.
Nissan is targeting one million annual sales in China by 2030, with exports playing a key role, which makes markets like the Middle East increasingly relevant in its long-term plans.
