Audi A5 Sportback debuts in Europe

Audi A5 Sportback
Expanding its line-up with redundant models, Audi has unveiled the 2010 A5 Sportback, a five-door model that is apparently trying to be a coupe, a sedan and a station wagon all at the same time, according to the VW-owned German company. The Sportback joins the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third member of the A5 model family.

The liftback vehicle is 36 mm lower than the A4 sedan and has frameless doors. The luggage compartment volume of 480 litres nearly matches that of the A4 Avant and increases to 980 litres with the rear seats folded down.

All models are equipped with a recuperation system that recovers energy during braking and deceleration and stores it temporarily in the battery.

Audi is initially offering three underwhelming petrol engines, with more engines to follow by mid-2010. The gasoline engines are a 180 hp 2.0-litre TFSI turbo 4-cylinder, the higher-tuned 211 hp 2.0-litre TFSI turbo 4-cylinder and the 265 hp 3.2-litre V6, all of which are outclassed by traditional V6-powered Japanese family sedans. All models have Quattro all-wheel-drive, although front-wheel-drive models are also available with European diesel engines choices. Depending on engine, the various models will come with either manual, CVT or 7-speed automanual gearboxes.

Options include sport differential, adaptive shock absorber control or dynamic steering with variable boost.

Sales of the A5 Sportback have already begun in Europe. Assuming the car is offered in the GCC, expect a UAE debut sometime before the summer of 2010, judging by the long time it takes for new Audi models to reach Dubai and Abu Dhabi showrooms.

  1. I have been reviewing your comments on all Audi models over the past years. I believe you are letting your personal problems with them impair your objectivity.

Audi is a leading automaker and it cannot be that bad in all respects as you are trying to imply.

Yes, I have a problem with Audi and they have a problem with me. Although you will have to point out to me if I have ever said anything inaccurate about them. I never lie.

  3. I have to agree with Ashraf here.
You have very valid reasons to not like VW and Audi, but you hav been a little too harsh on all their cars!

personally I am big fan of BMW when it comes to German cars…but really fell in love with Audi after my friend got a Q5…nice car…real good build quality…nice engine…great handling and commendable off road performance though not hard core…my only pet peeve is rear leg space…
