2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport officially revealed

2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 1

Mitsubishi has officially taken the covers off their latest iteration of the Pajero Sport at the Bangkok International Grand Motor Sale show in Thailand this week. This is the 4×4’s first refresh since 2008, and will only be the third generation of the almost two-decade-old flagship.

The new Pajero Sport takes on a completely new “Dynamic Shield” fascia for 2016, while still maintaining the raised stature as its predecessor. There’s also a fair amount of chrome incorporated into the front, which extends all the way into the lights. The thin headlamps also integrate LED running lights, while the rear gets vertically-extended tail lamps and a bulky C-pillar.

The interior of the Pajero Sport has certainly progressed, with silver inserts on the door panel, a redesigned glossy black dashboard with a built-in infotainment system, and leather seats as well as side panels. In addition to that, there’s also a completely new steering wheel.

The SUV is offered with a 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo-diesel engine mated to an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission. Mitsubishi hasn’t revealed any details about a petrol engine for the Pajero Sport as yet. However, we assume if the SUV will make it to the GCC, it will get a 3.5-litre V6 derived from the existing Pajero.

The Pajero Sport is said to use an evolved version of the ‘Super-Select 4WD-II’ drive system complemented by a new ‘Off-Road’ mode and a ‘Hill Descent Control’ system.

The new Pajero Sport will be built in Thailand and will be available there by October. Whether it will make it to the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the GCC is still not known, but it won’t be before next summer.

Comments

  1. I think overall it’s excellent, but that HIDEOUS rear end is keeping me from liking it, but its a million times better than the ’16 Fortuner.

  2. Complete dampener from Mitsubishi – doesn’t justify the 8-years-in-the-making time! – I’ll give it a pass

  3. not that 3.5 again…nope!

  4. A completely New Thing!! But has to think how much we’ve to give for it out of ten.
By its first looks its much above an average design. The front portion has an excellent design qualities which is very appreciable. But Coming to the rear; Honestly I’m not pretty impressed with it. But could have been more impressive. But it has got a much better interior.
But comparing with its counter part(fortuner) i feel like its much a better piece.

  5. I feel that the bodyroll will be there.. But the design, its excellent.. Looks like a concept model..

  6. I think we’re entering into this “futuristic design” trend, I’ve been noticing weird designs lately. btw, the rear looks awkward reminds me of that new Escalade’s rear which is also awkward.

  7. It is not at the first look, it seems it is like a longer version of the CRV?

  8. Side profile looks like a hunchback

  9. The interior is a huge improvement and it remains to be seen what engines we get here. Here’s hoping we get an improved engine even if it displaces anywhere between 3.5ltrs – 4ltrs. There’s no doubting the 4×4 system as it’s legendary. The design of the rear, unfortunately, looks like a rush job…like the designers couldn’t figure out what to do and just went ahead and did the 1st thing that came to their minds. Having said that it is evident there is more space inside as the roof doesn’t slope.
As for the Fortuner, no matter what, people here will still buy them in droves.

  10. Oh my God.. look at that butt.. lol.. sooooooooo hideous. i might just have designed better..

  11. Yes, the rear looks hideous. But considering how ugly the current Prado and Fortuner look, I think it’s safe to say that the design is gonna grow on people, and it’s gonna sell if it’s priced right. I actually love the front and the interior, just wish they had paid more attention to the rear.

    • fully agree with you.

though i think they actually spent most time on the rear coming up with something new/ fancy, unfortunately they failed..

  12. Extremely ugly looking SUV.

  13. Whats about the SHORT WAIST version? Will there be any?

  14. Third row windows could have been bigger. And the rear is a bit awkward. 🙁

  15. Definitely Fortuner will outsell the pajero sport. I like the outgoing model it looks fairly decent. Front facia looks good and the hideous rear makes me feel like the fortuner is the better looking (overall). I guess if the pricing is right, pajero sport will sell in good numbers. Somehow the rear reminds me of Tata Aria ( A MUV in Indian market).

  16. Mitsubishi is one of the car brands that is predicted to disappear from the US market before 2020.

With these kinds of designs, lack of innovation and poor levels of dealer support, it might also hold true for the Middle East.

  17. I’m quite happy to know the both pajero and fortuner doesn’t quite compete with kia Sorento’s looks. (biased cause I drive a sorento) But still I cannot accept that butt and the fortuners confused styling. Im more on the looks because I dont drive offroad…I mean you really cant rely doing the same on a fortuner or pajero to do dune bashing right?

  18. Butt Ugly!
But the Pajero was never famous for its looks
It was always a good car that offered good value for money

  19. Hey ,
This was launched about 2 weeks ago , comes with a 3.0 mivec petrolwith 8 speed tranny.full op for 107 k which comes with blind spot , foward mitigation, full airbags.doing a test drive soon, apart from poor dealer , I think it’s a good product .I drive a 2015 focus st and hoping to add this.cheers!

  20. They have named it as Montero Sport, not Pajero Sport.

  21. Without any kits like rear roof spoiler and front and rear guards

  22. Good news is that, 2wd version available with a competitive price and reasonable and useful features compare to new fortuner.

  23. I test drove the car yesterday and here are my observations:-

    Ride is smooth
Seating is lower than current Pajero
Sufficient power, Low Noise inside cabin – pleasantly surprised
Riding on kacha road was really smooth, does not feel the vibrations inside
Cornering was not great, but was okay
Confusing steering, too many controls and buttons in a small space
Cabin is crammed, feels like it’s less wider than Pajero
Storage space on doors are more accessible
Leather seats looks n feels better, but they only have Beige
Front driver seat is electric but not the passenger side.
Display unit was not clear at noon, probably because of the brightness/contrast adjustment.
Front looks beautiful, but the back as many of you said is not the best.
    18″ Tires
Only 1 free service, Service contract price is not set but is expected to be less expensive than Pajero.
Warranty 3 years/60K km, extended warranty not available at present.

    Overall, good value for money.

  24. Dawgs its a 3.0 liter v6 not a that shitty 3.5 this one has 219 horsepower
