2026 Toyota Hilux

2026 Toyota Hilux unveiled with BEV variant

Toyota Motor Corporation has revealed the next-generation Hilux, introducing a battery-electric model for the first time in the nameplate’s history. The world premiere took place in Bangkok, Thailand, during a regional launch event hosted by Toyota Motor Asia.

The new Hilux will follow Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy, which offers different powertrains depending on market needs — including diesel, battery-electric (BEV), and a future fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Asian markets will begin receiving the new model from 2026 onwards, while the Japan-spec Hilux — including a diesel variant — is planned for a mid-2026 release. Toyota will also introduce a Hilux FCEV in Europe and Oceania starting in 2028. We don’t think the BEV version is scheduled to come to the Middle East anytime soon.

A key step in Toyota’s carbon-neutral roadmap

Toyota says the diversified powertrain lineup is part of its approach to offer electrification tailored to each region’s energy readiness and customer usage. The Hilux plays a pivotal role in this plan as it is one of the brand’s most globally important utility vehicles.

New Hilux BEV prototype revealed

The highlight of the event was the first public showing of the Hilux BEV prototype. The model uses a lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 59.2 kWh and targets a driving range of over 300 km (NEDC), achieved through improved eAxle efficiency.

To maximise interior space and chassis balance, the battery pack is mounted under the floor within the width of the ladder frame. High-output eAxles at both ends give the electric Hilux a 4WD driveline and a maximum system output of 144 kW. Toyota says the advanced control system enhances low-speed torque delivery for better off-road capability — an important requirement for traditional Hilux buyers.

Key specifications of the Hilux BEV prototype

  • Driveline: 4WD

  • Length: 5,320 mm

  • Width: 1,855 mm

  • Height: 1,800 mm

  • Wheelbase: 3,085 mm

  • Battery: 59.2 kWh

  • Range: 300+ km (NEDC target)

  • Max system output: 144 kW

Toyota says it will continue offering multiple electrification pathways globally as it works toward carbon neutrality, while ensuring the Hilux remains capable, relevant, and adaptable across different markets.

In the Middle East, the Toyota Hilux remains one of the top-selling commercial vehicles.
