I drove five new cars in the last two weeks. One of them is the all-new Nissan Sentra, handed to us before it’s even gone on sale in the UAE. It is always exciting to be among the first to test any new model, but this is simply an indirect replacement for the lowly Tiida sedan, so we had the lowest expectations from this one. We don’t like economy cars much. And we especially didn’t feel like driving anything built in Thailand. But the Sentra turned out to be the biggest surprise of this month, and quite possibly, the best car in its segment for the price.
My father owned Japanese cars ever since he moved to Saudi Arabia during the 70s-80s gold rush. An ’82 Mazda 929, an ’86 Corona, a ’90 Laurel (yes, the grey & black ones) & then a ’94 Corolla. My first car was bought in 2009, a 2001 Caprice LS & at the first opportunity in 2010 I replaced it with a 2004 Lumina LS which has been serving me effortlessly. Father vs. Son, Asian cars vs. American cars. I hardly ever choose to drive a Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai et al when I have other options available. Hennessey Performance made history recently with there latest incarnation, the Hennessey Venom GT. The street-legal supercar accelerated from 0-300 kph in just 13.63 seconds to enter the Guinness World Records.
Korean carmaker Kia needs no introduction, as the masses already know them as a brand that has transformed from virtually nothing into a fairly strong game-changing contender in almost all of the hotly-contested car segments, all in a surprisingly short span of time. In recent months, Kia has been rolling out several new models, and their latest offering is the all-new 2014 Kia Cerato, which was officially launched at a media test-drive event in Dubai.
When we were at the GCC launch of the 2013 Honda Accord in Dubai, the Japanese carmaker used the opportunity to launch two other products at the same event. One was an autonomous robot lawn-mower named Miimo that looked like a sleek vacuum cleaner. The other was the facelifted 2013 Honda Civic.
Lamborghini is planning to celebrate its 50th anniversary by releasing a special limited-edition model. Lamborghini’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann had previously indicated it won’t be a new model or a revival of an old model. True enough, it will be the Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4, set to debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
Trust supercar makers to make ‘epic’ videos, with their dramatic music, high-quality imagery and slow-motion shots. McLaren have done just that with their new P1 video.
Aston Martin has revealed the latest iteration of their four-door model, officially dubbing it the Aston Martin Rapide S. The Rapide S sedan is basically a facelift of the outgoing Rapide, but with a significant improvement in power.
The 2013 Honda Accord just had its GCC launch at an event in Dubai. The UAE played host to the debut of both the sedan and coupe models, and it was interesting to see that the Middle East version actually got its own unique mechanical specifications, based on consumer sensibilities here.
