Bugatti Chiron Sport sheds weight for Geneva

There are two ways to make a car go faster. Add more power or lose some weight. In the case of the Bugatti Chiron, which is filled to the brim with power, the latter is the most favoured choice. So, at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti uncovered the Bugatti Chiron Sport, which is 18 kilos lighter, faster around corners, and preposterously more expensive.

There are certain things that happen only once in a lifetime. One of them is the chance to drive a Bugatti of any sort. When the Veyron was new in 2005, George W. Bush was still the U.S. president and the iPhone was still a passing thought in Steve Jobs’ mind. Of course, now we have the Chiron. Our resident journosaur Gautam Sharma drove one at the global launch event in Portugal last year. And this winter, I was offered an exclusive drive of the exact same car right here on the roads of the UAE, with 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans champion Andy Wallace as co-driver.

This is a case where it would be all too easy to write a paint-by-numbers story. Every single measure and statistic relating to the Chiron is so plain absurd that the numerals in themselves make interesting reading. Fifteen hundred horsepower, 1600 Nm, 0-200 kph in 6.5 seconds, 420 kph (electronically limited for safety!), 16 cylinders, four turbochargers… and even that’s barely scratching the surface.
