2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rated at 580 hp

“The ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9 V12, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.” — Camaro Chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser.

An all-aluminum LSA 6.2-litre V8 rated at 580 hp at 6000 rpm and a mind boggling 754 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm thanks to a four-lobe intercooled Eaton supercharger and dual-mode exhaust that alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm, makes this the most-powerful production Camaro ever. To avoid burning through tyres on a daily basis trying to put all that power to use, the Camaro is equipped with a third-generation Magnetic Ride Control and a Performance Traction Management (PTM).

The Magnetic Ride Control adjusts damping at a rate of 1,000 times per second by employing valve-less damping and Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid technology that varies the suspension firmness according to driving conditions. It comes in three preset settings of Tour, Sport and Track. The Performance Traction Management on the other hand is an advanced system that integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control, to augment performance through 5 available modes.

The ZL1 will be offered with the 6-speed Tremec TR-6060 “MG9” manual with improved torque capacity or for the wider range of sports car enthusiasts; the “optional” 6-speed Hydra-Matic 6L90 strengthened automatic that features three drive modes, which are Drive, Sport and a no automatic up shift Manual for all the rev-happy crazies.

Destined to hit the US showrooms by February 2012 for a rumoured equivalent price of Dhs 172,000; expect it to hit UAE, Saudi and other GCC roads by the summer of 2012.
